Michael Hugh Paul McNeil
1955-2016

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Michael Hugh Paul McNeil, also known as Bunky on Saturday, March 12. Mike was first and foremost a family man; a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Mike’s personality shone for all to see; even strangers felt comfortable in his presence. Mike umpired at the Provincial level for Softball Nova Scotia. Mike’s love of life was evident in his passion for attending Blues festivals with the Keith’s brothers or playing washers in the back yard at Camp Cavendish. He was an avid hockey fan, whether he was watching his grandson or his favourite team, the Montreal Canadians. Mike worked for35 yrs for Gem health Care he started at Keddys Nursing Home then the name changed to Glades Lodge and the last 5 yrs he was at the Admiral Long Term Care Centre. Mike also had another passion; the Labour movement. He was a true union activist. Over the last 37 years, he held various union positions and worked his way to the President of CUPE Nova Scotia. He was predeceased by his mother Kathleen McNeil, father Frank McNeil, and sister Diane. He is survived by his devoted and beloved wife of 29 years Darlene, and children Diane McNeil, J.R. (Ursula), Emily (Trevor), his beloved grandchildren, Anthony, Brandon, and their mother Melissa, Tristan, Chase and Callie Rose, sister Christina, brothers Pat (Heather) and Darrell (Donna), and numerous nieces and nephews, his other extended family, Keith’s Brothers and Camp Cavendish. Visitation will be held in the Great Hall at the Anglican Diocesan Centre located at 1340 Martello Street, Halifax (entrance via the purple awning door) on Thursday, March 17 from 6:30-8:30pm. Funeral Service will be held at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, 1330 Martello Street, Halifax on Friday, March 18 at 11am. A reception will follow in the Great Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cathedral Church of All Saints Outreach Program. In support of the workers at the Chronicle Herald, this obituary will not be submitted to the newspaper.

CUPE Nova Scotia Higgins Insurance Scholarships

CUPE Nova Scotia Higgins Insurance Scholarships are awarded by CUPE Nova Scotia.  Two scholarships valued at $1,000 each are available annually.

Individuals planning enrollment at an accredited post-secondary institution in the 2016-17 academic year may make application.  The successful applicant will be required to provide proof of registration.

Eligibility:

1) Union members in good standing with a local union affiliated to CUPE Nova Scotia; and,
2) Sons, daughters, or legal wards of a member in good standing of a local union affiliated to CUPE Nova Scotia.

Basis of awards shall be the applicant’s financial need and current and ongoing volunteerism/social activism in his/her community.

Applications must be complete and on the prescribed form and must be received by the CUPE Nova Scotia Scholarship Committee no later than May 15, 2016.  Supporting documents must be provided with the form in order for the application to be considered.  Application forms are available by contacting the CUPE 3912 office at cupe3912@dal.ca.
