On April 12 – 26, 2022, CUPE 3912 members are holding a strike-avert information picket at Dalhousie University’s Sexton Campus to encourage the Employer to agree to a fair collective agreement, and thus avoid having to go on strike.
This strike-avert campaign comes in the wake of the membership’s March 25, 2022 decision to authorize a strike mandate at Dalhousie University to persuade the Employer to agree to better working conditions in our next collective agreement. Unfortunately the Employer has yet to agree to our demands, and we are at an impasse.
Come “Walk with Us” in the April 2022 Sexton Information Picket campaign.
What is an Information Picket?
An information picket means publicly displaying signs, handing out leaflets and cards, and engaging members of the public in conversations to draw attention and support for our plight for a fair collective agreement.
An information picket does not block people from arriving or leaving the campus.
Our Key Priority: Living Wages
- Bring Marker hourly rate in line with Living Wage in Halifax.
- Bring Teaching Assistant and Part-Time Faculty pay rates in line with those at comparable Canadian universities.
On average, comparable Canadian universities pay teaching assistants 45% more and part-time faculty 37% more than Dalhousie.
Additional Priorities for TAs and Markers
- No to Unpaid and Unagreed to Overtime. Overtime hours to be optional, and to be agreed to through course contract extensions, at the same hourly pay rate.
- Duty Form Use. Use a common Duty Form for Teaching Assistant and Marker contracts.
- Contracts Before Courses Begin. Have TA and Marker course contracts confirmed by the Employer before the courses begin.
- Contract Timeliness. Document the percentage of contracts confirmed before courses begin.
- Contract Transparency. Document contracts awarded with little or no competition, and why.
