COURSE DESCRIPTION: This interprofessional collaborative learning course provides students with knowledge, skills, and experience in critiquing and integrating health research into practice. Students will learn about the philosophical underpinnings of research, research ethics, design, issues in measurement, sampling, data collection strategies, data analysis and report writing including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The sessional instructor will be responsible for one-third of the workload, involving lectures (beginning in February), and for marking part of the student cohort (Jan-April 2025)—approximately 20 students.

Knowledge of health services research and critical thinking methods. Previous teaching experience desired. A relevant master’s degree preferred. Experience with Brightspace or equivalent learning management systems would be considered an asset. Excellent organizational and written communication skills are required.
Salary Range/Pay Rate The pay will be one third of the CUPE rate for half credit.

COURSE NAME: Pediatric Radiography, (Fall Term 2024)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This clinical education course provides students with the opportunity to meet the competencies required in pediatric radiography. A wide variety of clinical experiences are scheduled at the IWKHealth Centre, including mobile and operating room imaging, gastrointestinal and urinary system examinations, and general imaging. Under the direction of preceptors, students will apply theoretical principles and further develop professional skills and behaviours. Students will also have the opportunity to attend pediatric radiology rounds and observe related imaging procedures.

Format: Lecture (CEC in-person ti:mes vary)

WORK ASSIGNMENT:
The sessional instructor will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the course. This includes organizing clinical experiences, supporting preceptors, developing, and evaluating assignments and tests. This clinical education course provides the clinical experiences and academic support to enable students to meet the required clinical competencies for pediatric radiography. This 13-week course is organized so that each student takes the course over a four-week period. The course is supported using Brightspace. The maximum enrolment for this course is 7.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Certification in radiological technology and current membership in national and provincial professional associations. Relevant experience in pediatric radiography is required. Previous teaching experience is desirable. The successful applicant must have knowledge of the radiological technology curriculum, enjoy working with students and have good communication skills. Undergraduate or Masters degree preferred. Experience using Brightspace an asset.

Responsibilities will include all aspects of development of course materials for in-person, synchronous teaching, student evaluation, and administration of the course. AHSR 6009 is a synchronous online course delivered through Brightspace. Instructor and  students meet once a week using D2L online rooms within Brightspace. 

Academic Calendar Course Description: This course will expose students to a variety of more  advanced quantitative and statistical approaches to research methodology. The two main  purposes of the course are to provide students with the tools to conduct advanced  quantitative empirical research, and to further develop their ability to critically evaluate the  work of others. Students will learn to examine issues and develop research strategies to  begin to identify and answer important topics that need to be researched, and students will  design a realistic appraisal of what can and cannot be achieved, given resource constraints. 

Duties: Duties and responsibilities include course preparation and online teaching, course related student advising, and preparation and evaluation of all student assessments. 

Qualifications: Applicants should have a PhD in a health-related field (e.g., nursing,  psychology). Applicants nearing completion of a PhD program, or those with a relevant  Masters degree and undergraduate teaching and/or research experience, may also be  considered. Experience in online teaching is preferred. Experience with the Desire2Learn and  Brightspace is an asset.

(BMNG 5066: Biomedical Engineering Research Methods and Design) – Fall 2023

The School of Biomedical Engineering are seeking a sessional instructor to teach the first half of a newly established course in Biomedical Engineering Research Methods and Design controls. This is a graduate level course that teaches research skills and concepts needed to plan experiments and analyze data associated with biomedical research projects.

The first half of the course (which is content for the sessional position) is focused on statistical and data analysis tools commonly used in biomedical engineering. Specifically this part of the course is broken up into 4 sections:

  1. How to frame research questions, hypotheses and aims.
  2. How to select appropriate research methodologies, analytical techniques and statistical approaches for a chosen research question,
  3. How to design studies that adequately account for sex, gender, race and age effects, and
  4. How to apply appropriate techniques of data collection, organization, and produce effective graphical display of the data for a chosen research question. The instructor should be familiar with general statistical analysis methods and least-squares curve fitting.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Must have Ph.D. or be a senior student in a Ph.D. program and have teaching experience.

We are looking for a part-time academic to coordinate the ‘Health Seminar Series’ (HLTH6000.03; half credit). Seminars that make up HLTH 6000.03 are held bi-weekly (1.5 hours) over the X and Y terms (September 1, 2023 to April 30, 2024). The Health Seminar Series is designed to expose students in the PhD in Health to the range of methods and issues in health research across health contexts as represented in the International Classification of Functioning (ICF). The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching HLTH 5140- “Prevention, Early Intervention and Population Focused Health Promotion”, during the Winter term from January to April 2024. NOTE: This is an online course.

Course Name: Anesthesia Instrumentation and Clinical Techniques
Course Description: This is multi-term course consists of two modules; the first being a seminar/lecture series during the first few weeks of the Fall semester and the second being two weeks of full-time clinical application program in the operating room. Students will be precepted by an anesthetist with focus on airway management skills and patient monitoring. Students will also attend an intensive 2-day workshop in management of the difficult airway. Depending on availability of clinical sites, students may be expected to travel outside the metro area at their own expense.WORK ASSIGNMENT: As the instructor of record for this multi-term course, the responsibilities of the sessional lecturer will include development of course materials, course delivery, teaching, and administration of the course. The sessional instructor will also be required to work with the RSPT team for coordinating clinical competency site assignments. Liaison with preceptors is also an expectation.
The maximum enrolment for this class is 12. This multi-term clinical education course runs September 2023 to April 2024.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Relevant training and at least one year demonstrated recent clinical experience as an Anesthesia Assistant in both pediatric and adult anesthesia. Clinical competence according to the current National Competency Framework (2016) in both pediatric and adult anesthesia is required. Current licensure with the Nova Scotia College of Respiratory Therapists is required. Undergraduate or master’s degree preferred. Previous course development and teaching experience utilizing on-line course delivery learning management system (ex. Brightspace) is an asset.

Academic Calendar Course Description:  

This course will expose students to a variety of more advanced quantitative and statistical  approaches to research methodology. The two main purposes of the course are to provide  students with the tools to conduct advanced quantitative empirical research, and to further  develop their ability to critically evaluate the work of others. issues and develop research strategies to begin to identify and answer important topics that  need to be researched, and students will design a realistic appraisal of what can and cannot  be achieved, given resource constraints.

The second part focuses on issues of particular relevance in the provision of health services; these issues may include: practice management; confidentiality and disclosure of information, including whistle blowing; consent to treatment, including issues regarding minors and those lacking capacity; mental health law; and the regulation of drugs. The third part addresses contemporary issues in health law such as cost containment, issues of care at the end of life, and the impact of human rights legislation on healthcare services and delivery.Responsibilities: responsibilities include all aspects of development of course materials for online delivery, online teaching, and administration of the course—including course preparation for distance delivery using Brightspace, lecture postings, test preparation, and student evaluation. Course Name: Anesthesia Instrumentation and Clinical Techniques
Course Description: This is multi-term course consists of two modules; the first being a seminar/lecture series during the first few weeks of the Fall semester and the second being two weeks of full-time clinical application program in the operating room. Students will be precepted by an anesthetist with focus on airway management skills and patient monitoring. Students will also attend an intensive 2-day workshop in management of the difficult airway. Course Description:  This class encompasses a broad spectrum of vision loss topics.  The pathophysiological basis, clinical manifestations, rehabilitation services, and treatment modalities of visual loss will be addressed.  The impact of vision loss, occupational and licensing requirements, typical child development, and Cortical Vision Impairment will be explored.  The social networks available for amelioration of vision loss will be emphasized.  This class meets weekly for 2 hours.  Some weeks there will also be a 2 hour lab component that focuses on local services for, and the experience of, those with vision loss.

Course Description:  This class encompasses a broad spectrum of vision loss topics.  The pathophysiological basis, clinical manifestations, rehabilitation services, and treatment modalities of visual loss will be addressed.  The impact of vision loss, occupational and licensing requirements, typical child development, and Cortical Vision Impairment will be explored.  The social networks available for amelioration of vision loss will be emphasized.  This class meets weekly for 2 hours.  Some weeks there will also be a 2 hour lab component that focuses on local services for, and the experience of, those with vision loss.

Format: Lectures, Labs, and Simulations

Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Must be Certified Orthoptist, Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist, and Certified Low Vision Therapist with ACVREP.  Minimum of five years experience providing rehabilitation services for those with vision loss.  Experience with Brightspace LMS. Two years of post grad teaching experience with innovative teaching methods.

Course Description:

This course builds on knowledge and experience gained in DMUT 2020 (Principles and Instrumentation of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound II) and HSCE 2040 (Pathophysiology for Health Sciences). This course provides a comprehensive study of the normal and abnormal cardiac ultrasound examinations. The student will review anatomy and physiology and hemodynamics of the heart and relate theory to echocardiography. General principles of cardiac ultrasound, normal echo examination techniques and standard views will be covered including two-dimensional, M-mode and Doppler. Clinical indications for echocardiography examinations will be covered as well as congenital and acquired cardiac disease processes evaluated with echocardiography. The course is restricted to Bachelor of Health Science students in the professional stream of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound. This course is offered online through Brightspace.

Job Summary & Key Responsibilities:

 The sessional instructor will teach Cardiac Ultrasound (DMUT 4020) during the 2021/22 fall term.

Course Description: This is multi-term course consists of two modules; the first being a seminar/lecture series during the first few weeks of the Fall semester and the second being two weeks of full-time clinical application program in the operating room. Students will be precepted by an anesthetist with focus on airway management skills and patient monitoring. Students will also attend an intensive 2-day workshop in management of the difficult airway. Depending on availability of clinical sites, students may be expected to travel outside the metro area at their own expense.
NOTES: Students taking this course must register in both RSPT 3001 and RSPT 3002 in consecutive terms; credit will be given only if both are completed consecutively.
PREREQUISITES: RSPT 2500.03
RESTRICTIONS: Restricted to Bachelor of Health Science students enrolled in the professional stream Respiratory Therapy
Qualifications/Requirements of Position Relevant training and at least one year demonstrated recent clinical experience as an Anesthesia Assistant in both pediatric and adult anesthesia. Clinical competence according to the current National Competency Framework (2016) in both pediatric and adult anesthesia is required. Current licensure with the Nova Scotia College of Respiratory Therapists is required. Undergraduate or master’s degree preferred. Job Summary & Key Responsibilities NOTE: This course is taught exclusively via distance learning using Dalhousie’s web-based Learn Management System platform.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: As the instructor of record for HSCE 2000, an introductory course in health care ethics, the responsibilities of the sessional lecturer will include development of course materials, course delivery, teaching, and administration of the course. Topics include: moral theory and principles and ethical issues in health care. The maximum enrolment for this class is 60. The class runs May-August 2021.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position Knowledge of health care system and previous teaching experience is required. Previous post-secondary teaching in the area of ethics in healthcare is required. A master’s degree is required (a master’s degree in ethics is an asset). Previous teaching online is preferred.
