CUPE 3912 members at Dalhousie are seriously underpaid. This graph shows the per-course stipend for comparable universities in Canada, where instructors are paid much more than our members. At universities that the Employer uses to compare salaries for the DFA (Dalhousie Faculty Association), members are paid up to 60% more than part-time faculty at Dalhousie. At Western, starting salaries at $7,990. This is over $2,000 more than our members earn per course.
In bargaining we proposed an adjustment to reach the median salary of the U15 universities as our first position. Following that, we shifted to use the DFA comparators (the median is lower than for the U15, but still substantially higher than for Dal). The Employer scarcely budged.
This must change.
We are currently negotiating a new Collective Agreement to improve working conditions for our members. Our key demand is that CUPE 3912 members be paid wages comparable to those comparators used for the Dalhousie Faculty Association.
