Fair Employment Week Events

We are hosting several upcoming workshops, in collaboration with the Association of Nova Scotia University Teachers and the Dalhousie Faculty Association, to discuss issues and opportunities relevant to contract academic staff. These will all focus on ways to Make It Fair for us!

Benefits for Contract Academic Staff in Halifax: Exploring the Possibilities

Strike! What to Do When Your Union Calls a Strike
Oct. 23 at 6:30
Dalhousie, Student Union Building, Room 303

These discussions are the start of our campaign to educate members about our working conditions as we prepare for bargaining in 2020. We will learn about what it’s like to be on strike from other faculty unions who went or almost went on strike and how it affected the outcome of their negotiations. Let’s learn from their experience! The second one focuses on what benefits could look like if we had them. At each bargaining session we ask for benefits, unsuccessfully so far. Learning more about our options will also us to make more specific, targeted requests for benefits at the bargaining table. The third one tackles the challenges of continuing our research careers while on short-time contracts.

Seeking departmental representatives

[gview file=”http://cupe3912.ca/wp-content/uploads/sites/146/2019/09/CUPE-3912-Departmental-Representative-Nomination.docx”]

We are actively recruiting Departmental Representatives for CUPE 3912! Consider representing your department and facilitating communication in our union as we prepare for our next round of bargaining in 2020. See the nomination form for more information.

We hope to recruit a representative from most departments by the end of September to facilitate communication of activities in CUPE 3912 this year, starting with Fair Employment Week panel discussions in October.

Becoming a Departmental Representative is one of the best ways to become involved in the union. We look forward to working with you!

Letter from the Canadian Labour Congress

Greetings Canadian Union of Public Employees,

Hardline Conservative parties now hold government in the majority of provinces, and so the stakes are high for workers and our families in the upcoming federal election.

An Andrew Scheer government in Ottawa is dangerous. With the help of his friends, Doug Ford and Jason Kenney, Andrew Scheer will have the power to roll back hard-won social gains and re-write the Canadian Constitution, all while continuing to sow the seeds of fear and division.

It is up to us – as working people across this great region – to call on Canadians to vote for fairness and defeat Andrew Scheer.

The Canadian Labour Congress and the Halifax-Dartmouth & District Labour Council are holding an election training camp on Thursday September 12th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel (formerly the Holiday Inn Harbourview hotel) at 101 Wyse Road in Dartmouth, NS.

This election training camp will give you the skills to defeat Andrew Scheer and elect candidates who support workers’ priorities like universal pharmacare, retirement security, climate action, good jobs and inclusive communities.

We are inviting you and other labour and community activists across our region to attend this important training camp.

You can register for this training camp by clicking here: https://action.canadianlabour.ca/hdetc

There is a Facebook event page for circulation (and to invite your friends) at: https://www.facebook.com/events/228221354760930/

If you have any questions, please contact Canadian Labour Congress Regional Representative Tony Tracy (email: ttracy@clcctc.ca or phone 902-223-9489) or Halifax-Dartmouth & District Labour Council President Suzanne MacNeil (email: President@HalifaxLabour.ca or phone 902-401-7768).

Click to view our Invitation Poster and our Invitation Letter.

Thank you for joining the campaign to build a Fair Canada for Everyone.

In Solidarity,

Tony Tracy

CUPE 3912 Membership Drive

We are integrating CUPE’s policy on membership. We encourage you to become a member in good standing by completing an application form and saying an oath at the next CUPE 3912 event.

Membership application form

What does it mean to be a member in good standing?

Any employee who works in a CUPE bargaining unit can become a member in good standing by applying for membership and paying the initiation fee (fee waived until June 30, 2020).

Only a member in good standing can fully participate in the activities of the Local and National Union. This means only a member in good standing can attend and vote at General Membership Meetings, run for any elected Union positions, vote in those elections, and participate as a delegate of the Local Union.
