The successful candidate will work in consultation and coordination with the full-time Composition faculty. This Part-Time Academic will be required to direct the Dalhousie Jazz Ensemble from September 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026 (Fall and Winter Term). Rehearsals are held weekly, resulting in a public performance each term. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: organization of the membership; scheduling, planning and preparation of rehearsals and concerts; overseeing the maintenance of the band music library and provision of a Method of Assessment. The Jazz Ensemble Director must consult with the directors of the Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra and Dalhousie Wind Ensemble regarding ensemble auditions and optimal placement of students. The Director must also coordinate with the Associate Director of Productions and the productions administrator regarding the selection of concert repertoire within the context of the School’s multi-year plan. This position reports to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.

Minimum Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Music, with significant training and successful professional experience as an orchestral or instrumental conductor; excellent organizational and communication skills; computer literacy.

This Part-Time Academic will be responsible to direct the New Music Ensemble from September 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026 (Fall & Winter terms). This ensemble will perform the works of students enrolled in the Composition program as well as creating their own repertoire through deep listening and collective improvisation. The works performed may be traditionally notated or use creative strategies outside traditional notation, such as graphic and text scores, and scoreless instant composition. Rehearsals are held weekly, resulting in a public performance each term. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: organization of the participants; scheduling, planning and preparation of rehearsals and concerts; overseeing the distribution of scores when applicable, implementing ensemble’s Method of Assessment.

The director must coordinate with the Associate Director of Productions, Voice Area, and the productions administrator regarding the selection of concert repertoire within the context of developing the School’s multi-year plan, including regarding commissions of new works and organization of special collaborative endeavours. This is an hourly-paid position reporting to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position
MMus or equivalence; significant experience as a performer and ensemble director; specialization in new and improvised music; knowledge of extended performance techniques and modern approaches to music notation; effective organizational and communication skills. This Part-Time Academic will be fully responsible for the teaching and grading of one section of PERF/MUSC3663.03 Advanced Digital Audio Sound Design, from January 1 to April 30, 2026 (Winter term).

This position is responsible for teaching the concepts, language, and technology associated with digital audio sound design, electroacoustic music, multichannel and live electronics / video processing. Students will use a variety of digital audio software (including but not limited to MaxMSP, SuperCollider, Ableton, and Isadora) to create original short digital audio/video pieces and/or sound cues. Students will also develop knowledge on how audio, electroacoustic music and live electronics are presented in performances, compositions and events using a variety of digital approaches and sound reinforcement systems.

The candidate for this position will work closely with teaching staff in the music composition and technical theatre areas to coordinate curriculum requirements. The instructor is required to provide a Method of Assessment. This position reports to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.

This Part-Time position will work with musicianship faculty to teach and grade one section of MUSC 1277.05 Musicianship 1b, from January 1 to April 30, 2026. Each class will meet for one-hour, three times a week. The instructor will work closely with the other musicianship instructor(s) and full-time faculty to plan and teach similar class content each week to ensure students in all sections progress through the same material at the same pace. The instructor is required to follow the provided schedule, method of assessment, and course outline.

This position reports to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Music or an equivalent, with special training and/or significant experience in the teaching of aural skills (solfege, sight-singing, dictation, and ear training), and keyboard skills (pop/jazz/lead sheet chording, scales, score reading, and figured bass). Applicants should be comfortable in a wide variety of styles including ‘classical’ but also musical theatre, jazz, contemporary classical, and popular music. Experience with arranging and conducting small groups is an asset.

The instructor will work closely with the other musicianship instructor(s) and full-time faculty to plan and teach similar class content each week to ensure students in all sections progress through the same material at the same pace. The instructor is required to follow the provided schedule, method of assessment, and course outline.

This position reports to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Music or an equivalent, with special training and/or significant experience in the teaching of aural skills (solfege, sight-singing, dictation, and ear training), and keyboard skills (pop/jazz/lead sheet chording, scales, score reading, and figured bass). Applicants should be comfortable in a wide variety of styles including ‘classical’ but also musical theatre, jazz, contemporary classical, and popular music. Experience with arranging and conducting small groups is an asset.

Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
This Part-Time Academic will be fully responsible for the teaching and grading one section of MUSC 2020.03 The History of Jazz. This class is taught in person, every morning Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu from 9:05 -11:55 AM (Studley Campus – Rowe Management Bldg RM#1020), from May 5 – 27, 2025.
The instructor is required to provide a Method of Assessment. This position reports to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Post-graduate education in music, either complete or in progress, and a demonstrated interest in Jazz studies; evidence of successful teaching at the university level, preferably in the area of Jazz studies; ability and willingness to incorporate or perform live musical demonstrations relative to the course subject matter; computer literacy.

This Part-Time Academic will be fully responsible for teaching and grading of the non-history portion of the course THEA 4735/MUSC 4360/HIST 4162: Advanced Seminar in Baroque Culture. This portion is worth one half (1/2) of the full credit course (equivalent to three credit hours) taking place in Český Krumlov, Czech Republic, from May 30 to June 30, 2025.
Travel expenses will be reimbursed and accommodation will be provided.
This position reports to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
