It focuses on the literature of Actor-Network Theory, evidence-based design, appropriate design, spatial analysis, participatory design, technological innovation, and the mapping of controversies. The student is asked to be familiar with the literature through seminar discussions and develop an argument for a particular aspect of theory.

This course studies translation: the re-creation of meaning from one cultural domain into another. Through practical projects and theoretical sources, it considers translations between architectural modes (writing, drawing, building, etc.) and between disciplines (architecture, literature, etc.). Its emphasis on lateral thinking complements linear processes in architectural research and design.

The School of Architecture at Dalhousie University invites applications for a Part-Time Academic Instructor position in the Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) degree program. The M.Arch. is a professional two-year graduate Architecture degree. Students complete a Pre-Professional Bachelor degree before M.Arch. enrolment.

The Instructor will teach a first-year 3-credit seminar in architectural technology. Graduate seminars are topics-based and can be developed in the instructor’s research and/or practice area-of-expertise. Graduate technology courses consist of up to approximately eighteen students, and meet one time each week for 3 hours. The Fall Term is a 14-week term. Graduate technology courses may be taught remotely. In-person is preferred.

This course surveys and undertakes research in computer-based architectural models and computer-assisted manufacture, logistics, and construction. After an initial survey of the state of the art, students work on a focused design or problem-solving exercise, Where possible, work will contribute to actual building projects, research, competitions, and/or publication.

This course studies the sequence of trades involved in building construction. It examines the material processes of various construction industries and considers their implications for design, with an emphasis on relations between convention and innovation.

The School of Architecture at Dalhousie University invites applications for a Part-Time Academic Instructor position in the Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) degree program. The M.Arch. is a professional two-year graduate Architecture degree. Students complete a Pre-Professional Bachelor degree before M.Arch. enrolment.

The Instructor will teach a first-year, 6-credit advanced graduate design studio and is responsible for studio development, lectures, critiques, assessment, and grading. Graduate design studios explore complex design problems through critical inquiry, iterative development, and integrated design processes. Students develop comprehensive architectural proposals that synthesize conceptual, spatial, technical, environmental, and material considerations while engaging contemporary issues in architecture and the built environment.

Graduate studios are topics-based and can be developed in the instructor’s research and/or practice area-of-expertise. Graduate studios consist of up to fifteen students and meet two times each week for 3.5 hours. The Fall Term is a 14-week term.

This studio examines the infrastructure of the metropolis and its influence on urban form and development. Topics may include systems for transportation, energy use, water distribution, civic institutions, spaces of social exchange, and ecology. Students develop urban infrastructure propositions with reference to innovative urban projects worldwide.

The School of Architecture at Dalhousie University invites applications for a Part-Time Academic Instructor position in the Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies (BEDS) Architecture Program. BEDSis a Pre-Professional undergraduate Architecture degree. Students enroll in the BEDS degree in their third year of undergraduate education, entering a two-year sequence in Year 3 and 4.

The course is structured as a 1.5 hr lecture + 3 hr seminar/workshop each week. Seminars are led by the instructor graduate teaching assistants. The format of the seminar/workshop is adaptable based on instructor’s course structure.

From prehistory to the 1500s, this course explores pre-modern formations and transformations of settlements, buildings, and landscapes through an environmental lens. With a comparative analysis of global examples, it traces how water, cosmos, animal and vegetal worlds, geology, and climatic systems have influenced patterns of land use, habitation, and material culture. This cultivates critical perspectives on architecture’s entanglement with environmental dynamics and planetary processes.

The Instructor will teach a 3-credit, second-year sequence course in architectural representation introducing digital tools and methods for representing, modelling, and fabricating objects and systems.     • Demonstrated expertise in laser cutting, CNC fabrication, and 3D printing required. As well as expertise in digital modelling and file preparation for these processes.

The section will be one of five, fifteen-student sections delivered during the term. The project scale for the project term is a community-based facility containing a long-span structure. The Instructor will develop at least two class-wide lectures on a select topic.

Studio sections meet two times each week for 3.5 hours each. There will required attendance to scheduled coordination meetings prior and during the summer term.
