This course focuses on the history of Africa and the emergence of the African Diaspora, interweaving aspects of the African Nova Scotia experience. It provides an overview of African history and the African Diaspora and the integral contribution of African peoples to world history. Africa cannot be treated as a monolithic or homogeneous entity; it is a vast continent with a multiplicity of nationalities, languages and cultures. African history is, thus, a correspondingly vast terrain. The Arab and European conquest of Africa make this situation even more complicated. Indeed, this is somewhat reflected in the different historical trajectories and uneven development of North Africa and what has been termed Sub-Saharan Africa. Generalizing about African history is made much more complex because of these and other issues/challenges. Since comprehensive and detailed coverage of this vast terrain is impossible, the focus will be on selected topics encompassing a survey of pre-colonial Africa up to the Atlantic Slave, colonialism and twentieth century independence and national liberation movements. A particular area of emphasis will be the immediate era of the post-Trans-Atlantic slave trade. As the Trans-Atlantic slave trade ended, various European powers vied for control of Africa’s territories and resources, which had a profound and lasting impact on Africans. How did this happen? Why did this happen? How did Africans experience this process? How is the Africa of the 20th and 21st centuries a result of what unfolded in the 19th century?

A part-time academic is required to assist with teaching and running this writing requirement course for students from faculties across Dalhousie in both the Fall and Winter terms of the 2026/27 academic year. The course is being run as a flipped classroom, with online lectures and activities accompanied by a large number of in-person tutorials.

This course aims to develop practical research skills, with a focus on researching the law in Nova Scotia and Canada using both print and electronic resources. It will provide students with a practical understanding of how to locate and update relevant case law, legislation and commentaries on specific topics. It will cultivate the analytical skills for students to identify the legal authorities and relevant case law to pursue specific research projects. The course will introduce students to fundamentals of legal/criminological research methods through the exploration principles, ethical and political issues, writing procedures, and various theoretical and methodological approaches involved in undertaking legal/criminological research. Students will also learn various data collection techniques and how to effectively organize and analyze both quantitative and qualitative information about legal/criminological phenomena.

A part-time academic is required to teach three or four tutorial sections (depending on course enrolment) of ASSC 1400.03 Introduction to the Social Sciences in the Fall term (September to December 2025). A part-time academic is required to teach HIST 2280.03/BAFD 2280/CANA 2280, African Nova Scotian History, Tuesdays and Thursdays 1605-1725, in the winter term of the 2025-2026 academic year (January to April 2026).

A part-time academic is required to teach ASSC 1800.03: Computing and Society in History. There are two sections, so two CUPE positions, scheduled for In-Person delivery. Section 01 is offered Mondays, 14:35-16:25, in the Fall term (Sept-Dec 2025). Section 02 is offered Wednesdays 11:35 to 13:25 in the Fall Term (Sept.-Dec. 2025). A part-time academic is required to teach ASSC 1700.03 Communications for Nursing and Kinesiology in the Fall term (September to December 2025). The lecture is scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays 10:35-11:25.

This is a large course that is restricted to students registered in the Nursing program. It provides an introduction to academic writing in the context of health and social care and focuses on professional and academic writing, critical thinking, and communication, particularly within nursing contexts.

The part-time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures, and the evaluation of student work, including both formal and informal writing assignments. The part-time academic will also be responsible for training and supervising teaching assistants, leading tutorials in the case of TA absences, and standardizing TA assessment of student work. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. or be near completion in a relevant field and demonstrated capacity to teach writing and communication at the University level. Experience teaching writing and communication to students in the health professions is preferred.

A part-time academic is required to teach LJSO 3500.03: Legal Research and Writing; currently scheduled for In-Person delivery, Mondays and Thursdays 1435-1555, in the Fall term (Sept-Dec) 2025. The part-time academic’s duties include responsibility for planning the course, teaching the class, coordinating guest speakers and/or library visits; evaluating the students, and administration relating to the class. The part-time academic must be available for consultation with students outside of class times. This position will report to the Coordinator of the Law, Justice & Society Program.

Training and/or experience in legal research, such as through a JD, LLM and/or a graduate degree in Legal Studies and/or Library Sciences; familiarity with legal databases and research archives and related resources. Ability to teach effectively at the university level.
