The department is seeking a 0.5 Part-Time Academic to co-teach BIOL/ENVS/GEOG/MARI 3633.03, “Spatial Information and GIS in Ecology” with another instructor. The course will be offered in the Summer session, April 29 – May 14, 2026, Monday through Sunday, approx. 0835-1625.

Working with another instructor the responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including lectures, labs, field trip planning, test preparation, and evaluation of tests and reports. Field trips in the class have included overnight camping trips. Together, the two instructors will also be responsible for preparing a budget in consultation with the program director and keeping related expenses within this budget; and evaluation of student work, including the project presentations. This course focuses on the growing importance of habitat-forming marine plants, including seagrass meadows, saltmarshes, mangroves, kelp forests and other seaweed beds. It covers up-to-date issues around wild harvesting, aquaculture, blue carbon storage, bioprospecting, habitat restoration, ecosystem-based management, conservation efforts, and climate change. The Instructor is responsible for the administration and delivery of MARI 3604 (Field Aquaculture). This is an intensive Summer field course offered April 29th – May 14th, 2026, Monday through Saturday, approx. 0900 -1655.

The Instructor will provide students with hands-on learning of aquaculture techniques through field trips to several aquaculture-related facilities (e.g. farms, hatcheries, research institutes, government offices) in the Maritimes and through laboratory exercises in water quality analysis, necropsies, fish processing, knots/rope handling, and culturing of artemia, rotifers, microalgae and other species. The Instructor typically works with local experts to provide students with small vessel operator and safety training.

The Instructor’s responsibilities include preparing and providing the lectures and labs, test preparation, and evaluation of tests and reports, Brightspace administration, handling student issues, submitting grades, hiring/supervising TA’s, communication with technicians and Aquatron staff, etc. The Instructor should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates preparing and marking.
