It addresses the ways mental health intersects with social conditions (such as poverty, housing precarity, addictions, criminalization), affecting occupational participation. The sessional lecturer will be responsible for all aspects of delivering OCCU 4500.03 / 5500.03, To Do or Not to Do: Social Sanctioning of Occupations, which includes preparation for lectures, delivery of content, evaluation of students in accordance with the provided syllabus, and if applicable, supervision of teaching assistant(s). Students will gain in-depth understanding of the way society shapes the values and statuses associated with occupations, where available through a comparative, cross-cultural perspective. This will be achieved through a comprehensive, interdisciplinary study of literature relevant to occupations.

Graduate degree in OT/OS (or related disciplines such as sociology, philosophy, criminology, etc.) is required. Experience in teaching undergraduate and / or graduate level students in occupational science or occupation focused courses in occupational therapy is preferred.

This is a 6-week intensive, on-site course held from May 11 – June 19, 2026. It consists of a Core Component and four modules, each of which will offer 3 hours of on-site instruction weekly.

We are looking for one Module Instructor (~50 hours for the course) who, working in tandem with the Instructor of Record, will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administration for their module, including preparation for lectures/labs and evaluation of students. Focus will be on ‘hands-on practical’ learning.

This course builds skills in critical analysis, evidence-based professional reasoning, presentation, and synthesis of previous knowledge into current practice. Using current issues in health and occupational therapy practice, the required exercises of reflecting, reasoning, determining a personal perspective, and developing a plan of action strengthens current and life-long learning patterns. Integration seminars (core content) will be used to support the acquisition of these outcomes.

Module Instructors should have a plethora of experience in one of the following areas: acute care, mental health, or motivational interviewing, such that they are able to lead a module on the topic. Conversely, applicants may propose an area of practice in their cover letter.

Entry Level to Practice Occupational Therapy degree. Subsequent Research Master’s degree preferred if Bachelor OT degree obtained. OCCU 6013

This is a 6-week intensive, on-site course held from May 12 – June 20, 2025. It consists of a Core Component and four modules, each of which will offer 3 hours of on-site instruction weekly.

We are looking for one Module Instructor (~50 hours for the course) who, working in tandem with the Instructor of Record, will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administration for their module, including preparation for lectures/labs and evaluation of students. Focus will be on ‘hands-on practical’ learning.

This course builds skills in critical analysis, evidence-based professional reasoning, presentation, and synthesis of previous knowledge into current practice. Using current issues in health and occupational therapy practice, the required exercises of reflecting, reasoning, determining a personal perspective, and developing a plan of action strengthens current and life-long learning patterns. Integration seminars (core content) will be used to support the acquisition of these outcomes.

Module Instructors should have a plethora of experience in one of the following areas: acute care, mental health, or motivational interviewing, such that they are able to lead a module on the topic. Conversely, applicants may propose an area of practice in their cover letter.

Entry Level to Practice Occupational Therapy degree. Subsequent Research Master’s degree preferred if Bachelor OT degree obtained. Previous teaching experience (especially with graduate students) is an asset. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Ability to teach in person at the Halifax campus at least one day per week is mandatory.

OCCU 2000.03 (Jul – Aug, 2025)

The sessional lecturer will be responsible for all aspects of delivering OCCU 2000.03, Occupation and Daily Life, which includes preparation for lectures, online-synchronous delivery of content, evaluation of students in accordance with the provided syllabus, and if applicable, supervision of teaching assistant(s). This course is delivered completely using Brightspace, Dalhousie’s interactive online learning management system.

This introductory course for students in any field of study is designed to explore the meaning of occupation in everyday life. Typically, the term “occupation” refers to categories of paid work. This course will explore a broader understanding of occupation as a framework for daily living; namely what we need to do, want to do, or have to do daily, and over time. Students will be exposed to a broad range of literature on occupation, including personal and environmental factors that influence, and are influenced by, occupation. Students will gain a deeper understanding of occupation as the foundation of everyday life through a range of perspectives and experiential activities.

Graduate degree in OT/OS (or related field) is required. Experience in teaching (especially with undergraduate level students) in occupational science or occupation focused courses in occupational therapy is preferred. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required. Experience in the interactive use of web-based education with learners at a distance is an asset.
