POSITION: Teaching Assistant, ENVS 3001.03, Environmental Science Field School                               
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Environmental Science, Faculty of Science
PAY RATE: Stipend for 90 hrs, according to the CUPE collective agreement
WORK ASSIGNMENT:  Three TA positions are available to assist the instructors with the summer class ENVS 3001.03, Environmental Science Field School, in the field and classroom. Duties will include assisting in preparation of class materials, obtaining, and preparing field gear and supplies, assisting in teaching duties in the field, providing logistical support for overnight trips, driving a mini-van or SUV to field sites, and assisting with marking assignments. This third-year, 3 credit-hour Environmental Science class will provide students with hands-on experience in the subject of field methodology across the interdisciplinary field of Environmental Science including forestry, invasive species surveys, freshwater systems, navigation with compass and GPS, and writing field notes.  The class will run August 18, 2025, to August 29, 2025, all day, every day. The TAs will also be available to assist the instructor with preparatory work on August 16-17 and post-class administration on August 30 and 31, if required.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Research, teaching or relevant class work experience in environmental science or a natural science discipline. Schedule must be free every day (must have no other commitments) from August 16-31, including weekends and for the overnight trips. Must have up-to-date certification in Standard First Aid and CPR, and a valid driver’s license.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The Teaching Assistant for Health Care Ethics will be responsible for working with the course professor  to ensure that the course runs efficiently. Position is for 130 hours for the  semester. This course is taught fully on-line.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The Teaching Assistant will assist with PSYO/NESC 3271.03 (Development Origins of Health and Disease).

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Watching and helping grade student presentations (pre-recorded 5-minute videos) with the course instructor. Presentations are due for students on two occasions (depending on their assigned topic): May 16th and May 23rd.
  • Reviewing and helping grade student final projects (infographics or written reports) with the course instructor. Final projects are due May 26th (11:59 PM) but there is a 3-day grace period until May 29th
  • Posting presentation and final project grades and rubrics to Brightspace (as PDFs).

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

  • Research experience in a field related to the developmental origins of health and disease with strong writing skills as the course content is fully derived from research in this area. 
  • Good competency with Brightspace as this course is completely online and delivered asynchronously. In particular, familiarity with providing clear and accurate assignment feedback and posting grades and rubric PDFs.
  • Good familiarity with Microsoft Excel (e.g., conditional formatting, formulas/functions) as this is how the instructor tracks the grading of specific components of the presentation and final project rubrics.
  • General availability between May 5th and May 16th in order to stay on top of course announcements and become familiar with the course set up (~1 hour of time).
  • Specific availability for grading the abovementioned assignments with the course instructor between May 17th and June 13th (~16 hours a week during these 4 weeks, any day or time that works best).

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The Teaching Assistant will assist with PSYO/NESC 3133.03 

(Research Methods in Memory). Duties include, but are not 

limited to:

  • Providing an online presence to assist/meet with students
    •   Monitor the course Brightspace communication tools regularly
    •   Post timely responses to questions about course material, lab assignments, etc
    •   Respond to inquiries from students asking about course content, lab requirements, requests for feedback
    • Use video conferencing, IM, discussion, chat or other tools as necessary to facilitate discussion of course material, as requested or required by the nature of the student inquiries
  • Marking lab reports
    • Downloading written reports from Brightspace and posting the marked versions back on-line
    • Marking multiple written assignments submitted by each student over the semester
    • A rubric will be provided to ease assignment of grades but written comments to the students – especially on the earliest reports – will be expected
    • In this fast-paced summer course, assignment dates are staggered throughout the three weeks of term but will require that the teaching assistant stay on top of the work to ensure timely feedback to students.
    • The final assignment is due in the last days of class; the TA should expect assignment grading to extend beyond the stated term end date.
  • Marking exams
    • Marking one online midterm exam and one on-line final exam, both of which consist primarily of auto-graded questions but that may require grading of a short- and/or long-answer questions
    • A detailed marking key will be provided online by the course instructor
    • Grading must be done in a timely manner to ensure prompt feedback to students; grading should be completed no later than 1 week after the exam closes
    • The final exam is presented in the last days of term; the TA should expect exam grading to extend beyond the stated term end date
  • Holding virtual office hours
    • In addition to checking and posting to discussion boards on a regular (daily) basis, hold “virtual office hours” at a set time for a short duration every day or every other day (for a total of 2 hours per week) during which students can drop in without an appointment to gain immediate feedback to questions or inquiries
      • Office hours may require but not be limited to the use of online TEAMS meetings
    • Office hours are meant to aid and guide students who request additional help and/or feedback on their work
  • Communicating regularly with the course instructor
    • Contacting the instructor as necessary to ensure that you are comfortable with the course content, to address any questions/concerns about grading or student performance, etc.
  • Familiarizing yourself with course content, as necessary
    • Course materials are provided online to students and are available to the TA for review
    • The TA must be familiar with the course material and content
    • Analyses depend on students using jamovi for one-way and factorial within-subjects and repeated-measures designs
    • The TA must be/become familiar with how to use jamovi for these analyses and able to help students use this tool for analysis
    • The TA must be comfortable with analyzing and interpreting within-subjects and mixed factorial experiments

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:  

REQUIRED

  • Knowledge and background in cognitive psychology and/or human memory above the 3rd-year undergraduate level (e.g., courses taken, independent research experience at an honours and/or graduate level)
  • Knowledge and background in statistics (e.g., courses taken, formal teaching experience in statistics), with the ability to conduct, report, and interpret multi-factorial within- and between-subjects analyses and appropriate pairwise comparisons
  • Knowledge and background in experimental methods beyond the 3rd-year undergraduate level (e.g., courses taken, independent research experience in an honours and/or graduate thesis, formal teaching experience in experimental methods/design)
  • Experience in scientific writing beyond the 3rd-year undergraduate level (e.g., courses taken, independent research experience in an honours and/or graduate thesis or PhD comprehensive project, scientific publication)
  • Knowledge of APA format

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Knowledge of cell biology, genetics or molecular neuroendocrinology an asset. Applicant must have strong writing skills and must be familiar with biomedical literature search sites (i.e., PubMed).

WORK ASSIGNMENT:

Approximately, but not exceeding, 50 hours of marking will be required for this position. The marker will be responsible for managing grades for 10 auto-graded quizzes and preparing virtual quiz post-mortem reviews for each based upon student performance, approximately 5 hours in total. The marker will also grade 6 virtual discussion questions and provide summaries to the instructors to create assessment questions, about 12 hours in total. The bulk of the work will be devoted to two exams at the end of May and mid-June, approximately 15 hours each, for a total of 30 hours. This involves grading short answer questions, recruiting and managing markers from the departmental marking pool, setting a grading schedule with clear deadlines, and creating virtual exam post-mortems.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:  

Strong scientific literacy is required—this includes knowledge and understanding of scientific methods, research design, and the scientific literature. Experience with virtual and flipped classroom teaching is required. Video recording and Brightspace experience are required. Familiarity with a Research Methods course (NESC/PSYO 2000, or equivalent) are considered assets.

  • Weekly meetings with teaching team (7 h total)
  • Prepping and facilitating 8-10 virtual, active learning sessions (about 2.5h per week for 6 weeks, 15 hours total) 
  • Prepping and facilitating 3 lab activity sessions and light marking (about 2h per week for first 3 weeks, 6 hours total)
  • Prepping and facilitating 5 data analysis and report writing sessions and heavy marking (about 6 hours per week for 5 weeks, 30 hours total)
  • Student writing support prep and meetings, (approximately 12 hours)
  • Grading students’ final written lab reports (approximately 20 hours)

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

Strong scientific literacy is required; this includes demonstrated understanding of scientific methods, experimental design, statistical analysis and interpretation, and scientific reading and writing. Experience with virtual and flipped classroom teaching is required. Experience marking and providing feedback on scientific writing, and prior experience TAing a Research Methods course (NESC/PSYO 2000, or equivalent) are considered assets.

Work Assignment:
This teaching assistant position will be required to assist the instructor of ARBC 2100/RELS 2052: A Cultural Introduction to the Arab World, January 2025 – April  2025. The classes are scheduled for Monday and Wednesday, 17:35 – 18:55. The teaching  assistant will be responsible for meeting with the instructor, marking tests and final exam and  invigilating examinations with the instructor. A number of tutorials (4) may be given. The position  reports to Dr. Firanescu, professor of ARBC 2100/RELS 2052.

Requirements:
Applicants should hold a BA in Middle Eastern Studies, Religious Studies and History or a Minor  in Arabic Studies (or be advanced on their way of completing it) and be familiar with the Arabic  Culture. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed and achieved a high  standing in this course ARBC 2100/RELS 2052 (and HIST2500, if the class was taken before  2017).  

Non-student TA assignments are limited to no more than six hundred and fifty hours per term.  For clarity, this means TAs cannot work more than five (5) TA130 contracts. If a TA has  accepted six hundred and fifty contract hours in a term, they are not able to accept any  additional TA, marker or demonstrator hours.

Work Assignment: 

Each Teaching Assistant will be responsible for leading at least one in-person tutorials per one TA130 position, attending lectures, and providing support for ASSC 1971 “Engineering & Society.” 

Each tutorial is capped at 30 students. TA duties include but are not limited to: attending weekly lectures and assigned tutorials; regular consultation with the course instructor; and grading several written assignments and a take-home exam.

Requirements of Position: 

  • Teaching Assistants should be currently enrolled in, or have a degree from, a humanities graduate program, preferably with experience in literary studies, the history of science and technology, and/or the history of philosophy. Experience leading tutorials and teaching writing skills are important. 
  • This course will juxtapose key examples of global built culture with literary/philosophical texts. Its goal is to assist students as they discover the complementary ways in which texts and built culture may be interpreted, as well as the ways in which literary and philosophical texts can frame the ethical stakes of engineering. A passion for primary texts, including novels and poetry, is critical to the enjoyment of this position. 

Lectures and tutorials will be held in person. Applicants must be available during the lecture time  (Tuesdays, 18:35-20:25) as well as T06 tutorial time (Thursdays, 16:35-17:25). Please note that lectures and tutorials are held at the Sexton Campus.
