Special Topic: Schools, Societies and Educational Change

Wednesdays, 01:00pm – 03:30pm

Course Description:

A study of changing North American perspectives on schooling, including approaches to teaching and learning, is the focus of this course.  It will include critical analysis of the visions underlying the many reform movements that have taken place. Schooling will be examined through such diverse lenses as: the rise of the bureaucratic order; educational and gender equality; school culture and work life; the public, families and communities; and policy leadership and accountability. Conflicting goals and paradoxes in school reform will be explored, and the many ways in which schools address the most critical and contentious educational issues of our time will be explored.

Qualifications: 

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Education, with specializations in the history, philosophy and political foundations of schooling in North America.  A publishing record on the academic study of educational policy relating to school systems is required, as well as extensive professional engagement as a practicing teacher, administrator and leader in primary and secondary schools in Nova Scotia.  Active participation in community dialogue on educational issues, experience in political office, and production of educational research on schooling is expected, as well as participation in the ResearchEd community of practice at Saint Mary’s University.  Prior experience teaching EDUC 3309, EDUC 4309 or EDUC 5691 courses at SMU is required, as is a track record of engagement with regional, national and international forums on issues relating to the schooling of children and youth.   

Remuneration:

Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement between Saint Mary’s University and CUPE 3912
