This seminar is the capstone seminar for the Certificate in Health, Wellness and Sport in Society. Students are provided with an opportunity to integrate their knowledge of the social study of health, wellness and sport, consider perspectives from different disciplines, and consider the connections between research and the broader public. Emphasis will be placed on the activities of government, the role of voluntary groups and agencies, and citizen participation. Students will complete a major research paper and learn advanced research and presentation skills.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. completed or near completion in a field related to the study of health or sport (such as sociology, anthropology, history, or other discipline in the social sciences or humanities). The preferred applicant will have a demonstrated track record in teaching interdisciplinary courses.  It is also preferable that the applicant has engaged in scholarly activities pertaining to health or sport, such as research activity.

Duties and responsibilities include preparation and delivery of lectures, preparation and evaluation of all student assessments.

Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

A part-time academic is required to teach four tutorial sections of ASSC 1400.03 Introduction to the Social Sciences in the Fall term (September to December 2024). The sections are scheduled on Mondays from 11:35-12:25; Tuesdays from 15:35-16:25; Wednesdays from 14:35-15:25; and Fridays from 10:35-11:25. The part-time academic will also be required to attend the weekly lecture on Fridays from 11:35-13:25.

Duties include leading tutorials consisting of 25 students per section, mentoring students, and marking assignments in this multi-disciplinary, team-taught first-year class, the curriculum of which includes topics and readings related to globalization, social justice, and climate justice. The successful candidate will have an active role on the teaching team and is required to attend occasional team meetings. The position reports to the Faculty Coordinator of ASSC 1400.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in a social science discipline, or be in the final stages of a Ph.D. program. Previous experience teaching at the university level is required

Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

A part-time academic is required to teach ASSC 1700.03 Communications for Nursing and Kinesiology in the Fall term (September to December 2024). The lectures are scheduled on Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:35 to 9:25, and tutorials are scheduled on Mondays from 8:35 to 9:25.

This is a large course that is restricted to students registered in the Nursing program. It provides an introduction to academic writing in the context of health and social care and focuses on professional and academic writing, critical thinking, and communication, particularly within nursing contexts.

The part-time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures, and the evaluation of student work including both formal and informal writing assignments. The part-time academic will also be responsible for training and supervising teaching assistants, leading tutorials in the case of TA absences, and standardizing TA assessment of student work. The part-time academic should also be available for two hours per week for consultation with students. The position reports to the Associate Dean Academic.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Applicants should possess a Ph.D. or be near completion in a relevant field and demonstrated capacity to teach writing and communication at the University level. Experience teaching writing and communication to students in the health professions is preferred.

The University of King’s College’s Contemporary Studies Program invites applications for a part-time instructor who would be responsible for teaching the following course in the Winter term (January-April 2024):

CTMP 2115.03   The Idea of Race in Philosophy, Literature, and Art  
What is race? How does racism impact our sense of self and the communities in which we live? The first part of this class examines the emergence of the modern idea of race, in relation to European expansionism and colonialism, philosophical ideas of the time, and the development of science. The second part of the class focuses on contemporary conceptions of race and their relations to culture, history, ideology, science, and everyday lived experience. We will consider contemporary debates on race and racism in the works of thinkers, writers, artists, and social activists, reflecting on the concept of white privilege and on the intersections of race, class, and gender.

For 2023-24, the class is scheduled in the Winter term on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-8:30 pm.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching 3 hours of classes per week, evaluating assignments, attending staff meetings, and holding office hours.  If eligible, the candidate may be required to supervise a teaching assistant(s). This position reports to the Director of the Program.

Qualifications and Experience: Applicants should possess, as a minimum requirement, a Master’s degree in interdisciplinary humanities or a relevant discipline or field of research, although a Ph.D. is preferred. Expertise in critical race theory will be an asset. Prior experience teaching at the university level is required.

Pay Rate: Remuneration is based upon qualifications and experience.

Extending over both terms these two courses, together, comprise the 3-credit-hour Honours Seminar in Law Justice and Society, which is taken by the Honours students in their final year of the LJS Program. The course may be rescheduled in accordance with the availability of the students enrolled, with anticipated bi-weekly meetings. The part-time academic’s duties include responsibility for planning, teaching and the related administration of the course, the focus of which will be on supporting students through the processes of the proposing, researching, drafting, and editing a substantial research project and/or thesis. EMSP 2215.03/EURO 2101.03   Violence and Wonder: Baroque Art (on-line course)

This online course examines the key monuments of Baroque art and architecture and the social and political context in which they were produced. The course begins in the 1560s, a decade that saw the death of Michelangelo, the end of the Council of Trent, and the publication of the second edition of Giorgio Vasari’s Lives of the Artists. Examining Mannerism and its critics in the Catholic Reformation sets the ground for the 17th century reform of art spurred on by Caravaggio and the Carracci. Their legacy—and the themes of violence and wonder—will be traced through the work of the Caravaggisti and the illusionistic Baroque ceiling painters. The importance of Rome as a locus of Baroque art will be a central focus, but the course also considers the distinctive political, religious, and cultural life of Flanders, the Dutch Republic, Spain, and France.

For 2022/23 the class is scheduled in the winter term, Monday & Wednesday, 10:05-11:25. This course will be offered virtually and can be organized synchronously or a-synchronously (or hybrid) at the discretion of the instructor.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching 3 hours of classes per week, evaluating assignments, attending staff meetings, and holding office hours. This position reports to the Director of the Program.

Qualifications and Experience: Applicants should possess, as a minimum requirement, a Master’s degree in art history or visual, material culture studies. Prior experience teaching at the university level is an asset.

Academic Calendar Description

 

This seminar is the capstone seminar for the Certificate in Health, Wellness and Sport in Society. Students are provided with an opportunity to integrate their knowledge of the social study of health, wellness and sport, consider perspectives from different disciplines, and consider the connections between research and the broader public. Emphasis will be placed on the activities of government, the role of voluntary groups and agencies, and citizen participation. Students will complete a major research paper and learn advanced research and presentation skills.

 

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. completed or near completion in a field related to the study of health or sport (such as sociology, anthropology, history, or other discipline in the social sciences or humanities) and experience in undergraduate teaching. The preferred applicant will have a demonstrated track record in teaching interdisciplinary courses, either through previous experience. It is also preferable that the applicant has engaged in scholarly activities pertaining to health or sport, such as research activity. 

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include preparation and delivery of lectures, preparation and evaluation of all student assessments.

This course is an Online-Synchronous Session on Mondays and Wednesdays from 16:05-17:25.

In this course, we examine the ideals of environmentalism from its origins in the late 18th century to the present. Topics include the romantic critique of industrialization, forest management and sustainability, wilderness preservation, animal rights, ecofeminism, radical environmentalism, Indigenous approaches to the study of the environment, and environmental justice.

The method of delivery (online or in person is to be determined). If the class is offered in-person, it will be held Tuesday and Thursday, 2:35-3:55 p.m.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching 3 hours of classes per week, evaluating assignments, attending staff meetings, and holding office hours. This seminar is the capstone seminar for the Certificate in Health, Wellness and Sport in Society. Students will complete a major research paper and learn advanced research and presentation skills.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. completed or near completion in a field related to the study of health or sport (such as sociology, anthropology, history, or other discipline in the social sciences or humanities) and experience in undergraduate teaching. The preferred applicant will have a demonstrated track record in teaching interdisciplinary courses, either through previous experience. It is also preferable that the applicant has engaged in scholarly activities pertaining to health or sport, such as research activity. 

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include preparation and delivery of lectures, preparation and evaluation of all student assessments, and holding regular office hours during the term.

HSTC 2410   Imagining Artificial Intelligence and Robotics 
Though the term ‘artificial intelligence’ was first coined in 1956, human beings have dreamt of creating intelligent machines for centuries. In this course, we will uncover the rich history of both artificial intelligence and robotics. We will begin with the automata of ancient Greece and work our way through the Islamic golden age toward the modern era of artificial intelligence research. This historical picture will be complemented by an examination of current advances in AI and robotics in a number of different fields, including mathematical proof, policing, high-frequency trading, art, agriculture, law, and advertising. Along the way, we will also pay close attention to the philosophical, social, and ethical implications posed by these technological developments and their applications to nearly every aspect of modern life.

The class will be offered on-line as an Asynchronous Session summer term (June 3 – August 27, 2021).

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting online classes and discussions, evaluating assignments, attending staff meetings, and holding online office hours.  If eligible, the candidate may be required to supervise a teaching assistant.  This position reports to the Director of the Program.
