The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching the field and lab intensive MARI 3627.03, “Biology and Conservation of Sharks, Skates and Rays”. The course will be offered in person during the Summer session, August 14 – August 30, 2025, Monday through Saturday, 0905-1655. Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including lectures, labs, field trips, test preparation, and evaluation of tests and reports. The part-time academic will also be responsible for preparing a budget in consultation with the program director and keeping field-related expenses within the approved budget. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates preparing and marking. Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus, or out on field trips if appropriate. This position reports to the Chair of the department.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position
A graduate degree in Biology or related field and research experience directly related to the topic of the course. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D. and/or previous university teaching experience in the subject of the course. The part-time academic will be co-instructing BIOL 3682.03, “Tropical Marine Biology”, with the course’s primary instructor. The course will be offered in the Spring session from April 28 – May 20, 2025, Monday through Sunday, approx. 0935-1555. The field trip for this course is a 10-day international trip to Belize. Responsibilities include teaching lectures and labs, planning the field trip, test preparation, and evaluation of tests, assignments, and reports. Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
(0.5 FTE) The instructor will be responsible for the Ethics section of BIOL 3037, Life Rewritten: Gene Editing for Winter 2025. Life Rewritten introduces students to gene editing and synthetic biology tools (eg. CRISPR) as well as both current and future applications of those tools for conservation, medicine, and food production. This course empowers students to develop informed opinions about the ethics of using such tools in science and society. The responsibilities of the instructor may include preparation of the course syllabus and lectures, evaluation of students, and, if applicable, supervision of teaching assistants. Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus. The position reports to the Chair of the Department.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
The applicants will have at minimum an undergraduate degree in Biology, or in a related discipline, as well as substantive, graduate level coursework in ethics and/or philosophy of science. Previous, recent teaching experience in the related discipline (e.g. bioethics) and demonstrated ability to lecture to a class of undergraduate students would be a definite asset. First time applicants must provide the names of two referees.

CUPE 3912 Job Posting for Part-Time Instructors

Department: Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Saint Mary’s University

Semester: Winter 2025 (January 8, 2025- April 23, 2025)

Qualifications:

Qualified applicants will have an MSc or PhD in Biology or related field, relevant experience, and an aptitude for teaching at the post-secondary level. Preferred applicants will have taught the course in question, or a similar course, within the past 3 years. Applicants for laboratory teaching involving chemicals should have completed WHMIS training or be willing to complete WHMIS training before the contract begins.

Duties: 

Lecture: Prepare, deliver, and coordinate the lecture component of the course; design, mark, and provide feedback to students on assignments and exams; hold regular office hours; compile and submit final grades including involvement in possible student appeals, and complete any other form of evaluation required by the SMU Biology Department and/or the University; comply with safety regulations that maintain a safe learning environment for staff and students.

Laboratory: Student instruction in laboratory procedures and methods, including pre-lab tutorial; supervision of students performing laboratory/field activities; supervision of teaching assistants (when available); evaluation of student performance and grading; preparation/administration of lab assignments and/or other forms of evaluation required by the SMU Biology Department and/or the University; holding office hours for students; compliance with safety regulations to maintain a safe learning environment for staff and students. 

Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement between Saint Mary’s University and CUPE 3912.
