(ERTH/GEOG 4520.03: GIS Applications to Environmental and Geological Sciences) – Winter 2025

The instructor will be responsible for the delivery of the lecture and laboratory components of the course (ERTHGEOG 4520). The Part-time Academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures, labs, test preparation and evaluation. The instructor will also work closely with and take direction from the primary course instructor (Dr. Christopher Greene) for planning, development, and delivery of the course. Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Minimum of a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Geography, Geology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science,) with specific expertise in geographic information science (both theory and application). Relevant teaching experience will be considered an asset.

Position Available Fall 2023:

SMU Geology Dept. Part-time Instructor

In campus delivery of 1 Laboratory section

GEOL 2301 1L Mineralogy

The labs will provide hands-on experience based on the study of crystallography (3 labs) and rock-forming minerals (6 labs). To deliver and proctor final lab exam.

Responsibilities of Instructor:

  • To deliver mineralogy lab instruction to undergraduate students.
  • To supervise teaching assistants with the lab instruction.
  • To prepare and deliver lab assignments. Note: instructor will inherit lab assignments from previous years, with samples, and can deliver with or without modification. Technician support is available to assist with lab preparation. 
  • To evaluate students and final lab exam.
  • To post and maintain a minimum of three office hours per week.
  • To comply with the requirements for PT faculty at SMU, the SMU academic code of conduct, and safety regulations to maintain a safe environment in the lab.

Qualifications:

  • The successful applicant must hold a minimum of a Master’s Degree in Geology or a related field
  • Ideally, the successful applicant would have a track record of successful teaching introductory level geology courses at a post-secondary level

Salary according to the CUPE Local 3912 Collective Agreement in effect.

Required Lab section: Wednesdays 2:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Start date (of classes):  04-Sep-2024 (actual start of lab will be at a later date)

In campus delivery of 1 Laboratory section

GEOL 1200.1LD Understanding Earth

The labs will provide hands-on experience mostly based on the study of minerals, rocks, soils, fossils, and geological structures. With in-class, lab and field components, students study the processes that shape our planet, such as plate tectonics, volcanism, erosion and deposition, metamorphism, and ore formation.

Responsibilities of Instructor:

  • To prepare and deliver introductory geology lab instruction to undergraduate students.
  • To supervise teaching assistants with the lab instruction.
  • To prepare and deliver lab assignments.
  • To evaluate students, midterms, and final exams.
  • To post and maintain a minimum of three office hours per week.
  • To comply with the requirements for PT faculty at SMU, the SMU academic code of conduct, and safety regulations to maintain a safe environment in the lab.

Qualifications:

  • The successful applicant must hold a minimum of a Master’s Degree in Geology or a related field
  • Ideally, the successful applicant would have a track record of successful teaching introductory level geology courses at a post-secondary level

Salary according to the CUPE Local 3912 Collective Agreement in effect.

Required Lab section: Thursdays 2:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Prerequisite: GEOL 1200 and GEOL 1201

Students are introduced to the essential concepts of groundwater flow and wells. Topics include: flow through varying geologic material, water resources management, baseline groundwater quality, contamination of sub-surface environments, and an introduction to quantitative methods. Radioactivity has an impact on our society and environment. Radiation given off during the process of radioactive decay is harmful, but is accompanied by the release of energy that can be harvested. The course reviews radioactive decay and explores geological sources of radiation, uranium deposits and mining, economics of nuclear power and the geological aspects of radioactive waste disposal. This course examines global changes in the Earth’s crust, oceans, biota and atmosphere caused by natural processes and human activity. Topics covered include the reconstruction of ancient environments, some of which were dramatically changed by meteorite impacts, volcanic activity and glaciation, and the evaluation of accelerating environmental change caused by phenomena such as ozone depletion and greenhouse gas emissions.
