Students carry out classroom observation and learn the practice of action research. The perspectives gained are foundational for their later teaching practicum assignments.

Qualifications:

Candidates must hold at least Masters degree in a field directly related to Teaching English as a Second/Foreign/Additional Language, particularly in pedagogical aspects of teacher development. Prior experience delivering an IMTE teacher practicum course, and in language teacher development using techniques of reflective practice as well as action research are required. Evidence of teaching success at the graduate level is required as well as experience teaching students whose first language is not English using strategies of content and language integrated learning (CLIL). An ability to carry out classroom visits for student teachers outside of class time is required.  A record of collaboration with institutions in the local ESL teaching community in connection with the IMTE program s required, including an ability to facilitate practicum placements in ESL/EFL/EAL. Additionally, experience developing and delivering courses in an online environment is required.

Program Description:

Course Description:

This course is intended for teachers of English as a second or foreign language (EAL/EFL/ESL). Students focus on the curriculum and methods used in teaching English to nonnative speakers both in Canada and abroad. The focus is on critical examination, analysis and evaluation of selected curricular approaches and pedagogical methods in foreign language teaching. Topics may include teaching for communication, and content and language integrated learning (CLIL).

Qualifications:

Candidates must hold at least a Masters degree in a field directly related to Teaching English as a Second/Foreign/Additional Language, particularly in pedagogical aspects of teacher development, and must have taught courses in the IMTE program in earlier semesters. Prior experience in curriculum development for EAL is required, as well as collaboration with our partner university in Giessen, Germany. Evidence of teaching success at the graduate level is required as well as experience teaching students whose first language is not English using strategies of content and language integrated learning (CLIL). Additionally, experience developing and delivering courses in an online environment is required.

Course Description: The course is an introduction to the historical, social and cultural contexts leading to the emergence of International (or Global) English, including a study of the effects it has had on global, national and regional identities and cultures, and the learning of English. The academic study of International English is integrated with development of English language proficiency for non-native speakers. The course is intended for speakers of English as a second or foreign language.

Qualifications: Candidates must hold a Masters degree in a field directly related to Educational Linguistics with a focus on Teaching English as a Second/Foreign/Additional Language, professional teaching experience in ESL, international experience and professional communications experience involving global audiences and/or non-native speakers of English. A track record of success in work with international transfer students (2+2) involving development and delivery of credit courses using a content and language integrated learning approach (CLIL) is required. Experience developing and delivering courses in an online environment is required. Preferred applicant will have taught web-based courses entirely online and will have experience teaching using features contained in a learning management system (e.g. D2L Brightspace); work and meet with staffing resources to setup the online course prior to the course start date; and communicate with students during the delivery of the course to guide them through proctoring arrangements.

Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
This instructor will teach CMMT 0030 – English for Academic Purposes for the period of September – December 2022.
The course is currently scheduled for 13 hours of in-person delivery per week.
The instructor will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures, test and exam preparation and evaluation. This course is designed to build international students’ capacity to speak, write and read English at a university level. Students taking this class will have a TOEFL score of less than 6.5. The intention is to provide a curriculum which allows students to achieve a TOEFL score of at least 6.5. The position reports to the Chair of the Department.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Teaching experience at a University Level an asset; Experience teaching ESL with a Degree in a related field and equivalent Experience and Professional Qualifications; demonstrated teaching effectiveness and excellent interpersonal skills with students and Faculty.
Salary Range/Pay Rate $15,696 to $19,083 (incl. 6% vacation pay) – Depending on teaching experience with Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture

Applications are invited in the first instance from part-time faculty colleagues on the Saint Mary’s precedence list. Applicants who currently hold a part-time teaching appointment at Saint Mary’s University should submit a cover letter and a C.V. Applicants who do not currently hold a part- time teaching appointment at Saint Mary’s University should submit a complete application (including a cover letter, CV, proof of academic credentials, name and contact information of three referees, and any evidence of teaching effectiveness).
