Course:  IMTE 5710.1ZA – Practicum II – Classroom Practices in EAL/EFL/ESL    

Program:  International Master of Teaching English (IMTE)

Semester:  May 2026

Schedule: Wednesdays 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Program Description:
Saint Mary’s University’s International Master of Teaching English program (IMTE) prepares non-native English speaking students to be teachers of English as an Additional Language (EAL/EFL/ESL) for the global context. The program includes elements relating to the Cambridge English Teacher Framework More information about the program is available at: smu.ca/IMTE.

Course Description:
Students engage in practical application of their developing knowledge and skills about teaching EAL/EFL/ESL language. In-class seminars on classroom teaching, including micro-teaching, are the focus of this practicum. Production of teaching resources and action research plans are included.

Qualifications:
Candidates must hold at least Masters degree in a field directly related to Teaching English as a Second/Foreign/Additional Language, particularly in pedagogical aspects of teacher development. Prior experience delivering an IMTE teacher practicum course, and in language teacher development using techniques of reflective practice as well as action research are required. Evidence of teaching success at the graduate level is required as well as experience teaching students whose first language is not English using strategies of content and language integrated learning (CLIL). An ability to carry out classroom visits for student teachers outside of class time is required.  A record of collaboration with institutions in the local ESL teaching community in connection with the IMTE program required, including an ability to facilitate practicum placements in ESL/EFL/EAL. Additionally, experience developing and delivering courses in an online environment is required.

Program Description:

Course Description:
Students apply principles of language acquisition, linguistics, and intercultural competence to the creative practice of course design. They complete projects that include needs assessment, expressing learning outcomes, developing lessons and learning resources, teaching techniques and evaluation. Emphasis is on selecting, creating and adapting resources that support specific needs and objectives.

Qualifications:
Candidates must hold at least a Masters degree in a field directly related to Teaching English as a Second/Foreign/Additional Language, and have expertise in practical applications of EAL/EFL/EAL theory to designing language courses at all levels.  Experience delivering teacher training courses in the Cambridge English framework is required, in addition to evidence of teaching success at the graduate level.  Competence using learning technologies as well as experience teaching students whose first language is not English using strategies of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) is a requirement for the position.

IMTE 5828.2A 

Special Topic: Schools, Societies and Educational Change

Wednesdays, 01:00pm – 03:30pm

Course Description:

A study of changing North American perspectives on schooling, including approaches to teaching and learning, is the focus of this course.  It will include critical analysis of the visions underlying the many reform movements that have taken place. Schooling will be examined through such diverse lenses as: the rise of the bureaucratic order; educational and gender equality; school culture and work life; the public, families and communities; and policy leadership and accountability. Conflicting goals and paradoxes in school reform will be explored, and the many ways in which schools address the most critical and contentious educational issues of our time will be explored.

Qualifications: 

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Education, with specializations in the history, philosophy and political foundations of schooling in North America.  A publishing record on the academic study of educational policy relating to school systems is required, as well as extensive professional engagement as a practicing teacher, administrator and leader in primary and secondary schools in Nova Scotia.  Active participation in community dialogue on educational issues, experience in political office, and production of educational research on schooling is expected, as well as participation in the ResearchEd community of practice at Saint Mary’s University.  Prior experience teaching EDUC 3309, EDUC 4309 or EDUC 5691 courses at SMU is required, as is a track record of engagement with regional, national and international forums on issues relating to the schooling of children and youth.
