The instructor will be responsible for the delivery of the lecture and laboratory components of the course (ERTHGEOG 4520). The Part-time Academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures, labs, test preparation and evaluation. The instructor will also work closely with and take direction from the primary course instructor (Dr. Christopher Greene) for planning, development, and delivery of the course. The sessional instructor will teach the Topics in ESS: Environment and Sustainability in Popular Culture (SUST 3951.03) during the 2024/2025 Winter term. It is scheduled for 3 hours per week to be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 17:35-18:25. The calendar entry is as follows: This Special Topics course explores themes related to “the Environment,” Sustainability, and the Climate Crisis in popular culture. Through film, art, literature, and other popular media, we consider subjects ranging from pre-modern environmental thought and imagination, to 18th and 19th-century cultural geographies of colonization, industrialization, and modernization, to a broader survey of how global cultural discourse about environmental governance, climate change, and sustainable development has been expressed over the 20th and 21st centuries. With an emphasis on primary sources and media analysis, the course asks how we got here and where we are going in a cultural sense, interrogating how the content and form of popular discourse and cultural expression inspires or limits our imagination in developing new sustainable futures, while also providing critical commentary on the darker sides of environmental politics.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position
The course is open to students in other parts of the University who are interested the historical memory and cultural expressions of sustainable issues, this topics course is being offered for the first time in Winter 2025 with a maximum enrolment of 30 students drawn from various undergraduate programs, including the Environment, Sustainability, and Society (ESS) major. The Candidate must hold a Master’s Degree or higher in the related discipline. Professional experience in this area will also be taken into account.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching SUST 3107.03,“Communicating Sustainability,” in an in-person or hybrid format (TBD), in the WinterTerm 2025. Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including review and updates to the Brightspace site, creation and review of course materials, quizzes and assignments, assessment descriptions and rubrics, management of the course delivery including communication with students, student engagement on Brightspace, and evaluation of all assignments.

The course will cover forms of communication used to discuss and share environmental topics today, including print and digital media. There will be specific emphasis on different audiences and outlet types, as well as how to pitch and produce relevant content for each. The chosen instructor will need to be sufficiently familiar with journalism and media relations to impart knowledge about technical skills that students will need to succeed in this course. Students will be encouraged to pursue environmental subjects that are relevant and personally intriguing. As such, the candidate must have a wide knowledge of environmental topics and feel comfortable expanding their awareness to support each student’s interests. A background in environmental studies and communication media, whether academically or professionally, will be ideal to ensure that the course provides realistic connections and skills for students entering the field of science communication.

The successful candidate should expect to spend some time before the official course start date in preparation, during the term overseeing course TAs and markers, plus marking assignments and conducting course wrap-up after the end of term. During the course delivery, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in both the lectures and selected tutorials.

A degree in a field related to environmental studies, with some emphasis on climatechange, environmental policy and ethics, sustainability theory, resource management,ecology and biodiversity, or other relevant abiotic/biotic factors.

Demonstrated evidence of teaching problem-based learning concepts to interdisciplinary students with varied backgrounds and experiences.

Expertise in interdisciplinary learning and teaching sustainability knowledge and competencies to undergraduate and graduate students.

Demonstrated experience in the field of environmental journalism and communication. Diverse experience with forms of media, whether digital (audio, social media, graphic design, etc.) or print (newspaper, books, magazines, etc.), is preferred.

Demonstrated competency in both virtual (Zoom and Teams) and in-person teaching.
Evidence of successful integration of accessibility/UDL principles into previous teaching.
Ability to work with colleagues collaboratively and constructively.
Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
Proficiency with Dalhousie’s learning management system (Brightspace) is considered essential.
Previous experience working with teaching assistants and/or markers.

This position will assist in the on-line delivery of BIOL/ENVS 4001 for the fall 2024 term, and the planning for an improved and expanded Environmental Impact Assessment Certificate. The position reports to the Chair of the department and works under the supervision of the EIA Course and Certificate Coordinator. The EIA course is the capstone course of the EIA Certificate and is a training course in how to conduct EIAs and SEAs (Strategic Environmental Assessments of a policy). PTAteaching duties will include but not be limited to the following:

· Design, lead, and mark synchronous tutorials for multiple groups of students (~5 groups in total depending on class enrollment).
· Design tests and assignments.
· Supervise the class markers.
· Manage the class web site.
· Assist with class administration as needed by the coordinator including Academic Integrity cases.

· Produce a term-end list of recommendations for improving the class for next year.

The EIA Certificate, one of the most popular in the Faculty of Science, is opening to a wider group of applicants including non-degree students. This position will work with the coordinator to build a comprehensive and phased plan to both increase EIA Certificate availability and to improve existing requirements. This work can include an online study of other similar EIA programs, curriculum development, consultations, designing an administrative-business plan and liaison with Faculty personnel as necessary.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
The applicants will have an advanced degree in biology or an environmental area. Previous, recent teaching experience in a related discipline (EIA, environmental planning and management, adult training) and demonstrated ability to lead undergraduate tutorials would be definite assets. Real-world experience with any area of EIASEA, environmental planning, and management would also be an asset as would skill in using teaching software (e.g. Brightspace). Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching SUST 3107.03, “Communicating Sustainability,” in an in-person or hybrid format (TBD), in the Winter Term 2024. Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including review and updates to the Brightspace site, creation and review of course materials, quizzes and assignments, assessment descriptions and rubrics, management of the course delivery including communication with students, student engagement on Brightspace, and evaluation of all assignments.

The course will cover forms of communication used to discuss and share environmental topics today, including print and digital media. There will be specific emphasis on different audiences and outlet types, as well as how to pitch and produce relevant content for each. The chosen instructor will need to be sufficiently familiar with journalism and media relations to impart knowledge about technical skills that students will need to succeed in this course. Students will be encouraged to pursue environmental subjects that are relevant and personally intriguing. As such, the candidate must have a wide knowledge of environmental topics and feel comfortable expanding their awareness to support each student’s interests. A background in environmental studies and communication media, whether academically or professionally, will be ideal to ensure that the course provides realistic connections and skills for students entering the field of science communication.

The successful candidate should expect to spend some time before the official course start date in preparation, during the term overseeing course TAs and markers, plus marking assignments and conducting course wrap-up after the end of term. During the course delivery, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in both the lectures and selected tutorials.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position

A degree in a field related to environmental studies, with some emphasis on climate change, environmental policy and ethics, sustainability theory, resource management, ecology and biodiversity, or other relevant abiotic/biotic factors.

Demonstrated evidence of teaching problem-based learning concepts to interdisciplinary students with varied backgrounds and experiences.

Expertise in interdisciplinary learning and teaching sustainability knowledge and competencies to undergraduate and graduate students.

Demonstrated experience in the field of environmental journalism and communication. Diverse experience with forms of media, whether digital (audio, social media, graphic design, etc.) or print (newspaper, books, magazines, etc.), is preferred.

Demonstrated competency in both virtual (Zoom and Teams) and in-person teaching.

Evidence of successful integration of accessibility/UDL principles into previous teaching.

Ability to work with colleagues collaboratively and constructively.

Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.

The Indigenous experience is examined in relation to environmental assessments (EA) using case-studies. The degree to which Indigenous peoples participate in the EA process is discussed. The challenges and shortcomings of the EA process from an Indigenous perspective are investigated. An examination of EA reviews helps to identify gaps in the current environmental assessment legislation.

This position is responsible for the on-line delivery of BIOL/ENVS 4001 for the Fall 2023 term for about 90 students. The EIA course is the capstone course of the EIA Certificate, and the instructor will provide a hands-on training course that guides students through a nine-step framework for preparing individual EIAs on a physical project as well as a Strategic Environmental Assessment on a policy. International, national, provincial examples are introduced to illustrate the framework. Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including lectures, 5 training projects, 40 tutorials, midterm test, and preparation of three assignments. PTA grades the synchronous tutorials online while Markers grade the 3 assignments. The rest of the course is asynchronous. In addition, the PTA coordinators the Faculty of Science EIA Certificate, which mostly involves fielding questions from prospective candidates. The position reports to the Chair of the Department of Biology.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
The applicants will have an advanced degree in biology or an environmental area. Previous, recent teaching experience in a related discipline (EIA, environmental planning and management, adult training) and demonstrated ability to lead undergraduate courses would be definite assets. Real-world experience with any area of EIASEA, environmental planning, and management would also be an asset as would skill in using teaching software (e.g. Brightspace). This position will assist in the on-line delivery of BIOL/ENVS 4001 for the fall 2023 term, and the planning for an improved and expanded Environmental Impact Assessment Certificate. The position reports to the Chair of the department and works under the supervision of the EIA Course and Certificate Coordinator. The EIA course is the capstone course of the EIA Certificate and is a training course in how to conduct EIAs and SEAs (Strategic Environmental Assessments of a policy). PTAteaching duties will include but not be limited to the following:

· Design, lead, and mark synchronous tutorials for multiple groups of students (~5 groups in total depending on class enrollment).
· Design tests and assignments.
· Supervise the class markers.
· With a Course Builder, manage the class web site.
· Assist with class administration as needed by the coordinator including Academic Integrity cases.

· Produce a term-end list of recommendations for improving the class for next year.

The EIA Certificate, one of the most popular in the Faculty of Science, is opening to a wider group of applicants including non-degree students. This position will work with the coordinator to build a comprehensive and phased plan to both increase EIA Certificate availability and to improve existing requirements. This work can include an online study of other similar EIA programs, curriculum development, consultations, designing an administrative-business plan and liaison with Faculty personnel as necessary.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
The applicants will have an advanced degree in biology or an environmental area. Previous, recent teaching experience in a related discipline (EIA, environmental planning and management, adult training) and demonstrated ability to lead undergraduate tutorials would be definite assets. Real-world experience with any area of EIASEA, environmental planning, and management would also be an asset as would skill in using teaching software (e.g. Brightspace). Applicants should include a cover letter, and up-to-date C.V. First time applicants must also provide the names of two referees.

Academic Calendar Course Description: This course focuses on environmental and natural resource policy in Canada and the world. Attention is paid to all scales at which policy is developed – local, provincial, national and international. The process of policy making is examined, including aspects of legislation and regulations, participatory and stakeholder approaches, and conflict resolution. Interactions between policy, management measures and compliance are explored, including the role of standards and environmental management systems, and the circumstances under which organizations and businesses comply with regulations concerning environmental impacts and natural resource use.

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess at least a Master’s degree in Environmental Science or a related field. The preferred applicant will have demonstrated relevant teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness. Experience teaching at the University level, in the area of the relevant course, would be an asset.

The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching SUST 3000.03, “Environmental Decision Making”. This course will be offered in the Fall Term, 2022. Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including review and updates to the Brightspace site, creation, and review of course materials, quizzes and assignments, assessment descriptions and rubrics, management of the course delivery including communication with students, student engagement on Brightspace, and evaluation of all assignments.

· A graduate degree in a field related to environmental decision making with expertise in interdisciplinary learning and teaching sustainability knowledge and competencies to undergraduate students.
· Minimum of three years of teaching experience and demonstrated evidence of teaching basic data/numeracy concepts to interdisciplinary students with varied backgrounds and experiences.
· Demonstrated competency in both virtual and in-person teaching.
· Post-graduate certificate in university teaching and learning or equivalent experience desirable.

Course:            ENVS 3460.2 Indigenous Experience & Environmental Impact

Course Description:

Students will examine the Indigenous Experience in relation to Environmental Assessments (EA) using a case study approach. The degree to which Indigenous Peoples participate in the EA process will be discussed. The potential challenges and shortcomings of the EA process will be investigated in projects that are currently under consideration or ones that have already been approved (e.g., mines, dams for energy generation, etc.). Gaps in the current environmental legislation will be identified and explored. Course discussions will be enriched and supplemented by guest speakers representing the experiences and expertise of Indigenous Peoples.

Prerequisite information:

A minimum of 45 credit hours.

Qualifications:

The minimum qualifications of applicants are a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science or a related field. Experience teaching at the University level, in the area of the relevant course, is essential. Established relationships with Indigenous Community Partners is necessary.

Duties:
