A part-time academic is needed to teach French 1005.06 (02): Basic French, in the summer term of the 2022-2023 academic year (July-August 2023). The course is scheduled Monday-Thursday from 9:35-11:55 a.m.

The selected applicant will teach the basic components of French grammar (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to students with no previous background in French or who have studied French up to grade 8-9. As instructor, the candidate will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures, test preparation, evaluation and electronic submission of grades.

Instructors are expected to maintain reliable and constant communication with the administration of the Department, to be available for two hours per week for consultation with students, and to have students fill out the evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course. Instructors report to the Chairperson of the Department.

The Department of Modern Languages and Classics is seeking an instructor to teach the following course which will be offered during the Winter 2022 term (Starting January 10, 2022).

Course: CODE FREN 1111.2A

COURSE TITLE:  Beginners’ French Level I

Department: Department of Modern Languages and Classics, Faculty of Arts, Saint Mary’s University.

Semester: Winter

Schedule:  Mondays and Wednesdays – 8:30 – 9:45 am. On Campus.

Course Description: An introductory course for students who have not had formal training in French, or not enough to justify their admission to FREN 2201 and 2202 as demonstrated on the placement test. Students who have completed two (2) years of senior high Core French or equivalent are not eligible for enrollment in this course.

We require that candidates have at least a Master’s Degree in French or a related field, and a demonstrated record of success teaching at the university-level. 

In accordance with CUPE Local 3912 Collective agreement (16.06), priority will be given to part-time faculty colleagues who are on the Department’s precedence list.

COURSE TITLE:  Beginners’ French Level I

Department: Department of Modern Languages and Classics, Faculty of Arts, Saint Mary’s University.

Semester: Winter

Schedule:  Remote Asynchronous

Course Description: An introductory course for students who have not had formal training in French, or not enough to justify their admission to FREN 2201 and 2202 as demonstrated on the placement test. Students who have completed two (2) years of senior high Core French or equivalent are not eligible for enrollment in this course.

We require that candidates have at least a Master’s Degree in French or a related field, and a demonstrated record of success teaching at the university-level. 

In accordance with CUPE Local 3912 Collective agreement (16.06), priority will be given to part-time faculty colleagues who are on the Department’s precedence list.

Students will work on a variety of literary, business and legal texts, both in English and in French. Students will reinforce translation methodology and theory through practical exercises and the analysis of translation in film and print media including subtitled/dubbed films, food labels and bilingual advertisements.

Academic Calendar Description: This is an introductory course in French for students who have had no formal training in the language, or not enough to justify their admission into French 2201 and 2202, as demonstrated through the French placement test. Students who have completed two (2) years of senior high school Core French or equivalent are not eligible for enrollment in this course. (Please note that this course does not count towards the French major and is not intended for immersion students, those having taken enriched or extended French programs, or Francophone students.)

Academic Calendar Description
: Prerequisite: FREN 2201 with a minimum grade of C and taken within the previous twelve (12) months. Taught in French, this general language course continues in the development of the basic skill set studied in Level I, with emphasis on oral functional ability.

NoteFREN 2202 must be taken within twelve (12) months of completing Level I; and this course cannot be counted for the French major and is not intended for immersion students or those having had enriched or extended French programs, or francophone students.

Requirements for position: We require that candidates have at least a Master’s Degree or higher in French or a related field, and a demonstrated record of success teaching at the university-level.

Remuneration: In accordance with CUPE Local 3912 Collective agreement (16.06), priority will be given to part-time faculty colleagues who are on the Department’s precedence list.
