Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
The Instructor will be responsible for teaching statistics and data literacy components of the Integrated Science Program (SCIE 1506/1507) in the Faculty of Science. For information on the Integrated Science program, see https://www.dal.ca/faculty/science/integrated-science-program.html). The instructor will be responsible for teaching introductory statistics content (equivalent to STAT 1060) and will assist with the further integration of data literacy and statistical skills into the course curriculum. They will also assist other program faculty in the development and delivery of integrated content sessions and will provide statistical advising for student research projects. The position is valued at the equivalent of 6 credit hours over the fall and winter, although the duties are more heavily weighted toward the fall term.
Course delivery in fall and winter term is expected to be fully in-person, though the candidate must be prepared to switch to online delivery should it be required by health guidelines. Specific duties include:
1 – Coordinate and teach Introductory Statistics content in SCIE 1506 (Fall term): Deliver the statistics component of DISP, encompassing STAT 1060 content and additional content specific to DISP.
· Deliver lectures (~20) and tutorials (1.5 h/week). Provide online learning resources, e.g., lecture notes and/or recordings, assigned readings and short, online pre-lecture quizzes.
· Supervise statistics TAs; oversee marking of tutorial assignments (8-10) and tests. Update assignments as needed, to incorporate student-collected data.
· Fulfill administrative duties associated with DISP statistics component (e.g., upload grades, hold office hours).
2 – Assist with instruction of the data literacy and research skills component (Fall and Winter terms).
The Writing in Science component of the Integrated Science Program includes scientific methodology, data literacy, and a research project, and is taught across fall and winter terms. The Statistics Instructor will be expected to
· Provide verbal feedback to student research groups on a data-related writing assignment (Winter term, ~8 hours contact time)
· Hold weekly office hours (Winter term) to assist students in the analysis of their project data.
· Assist in developing and delivering 2 to 4 workshops on topics including research design, variable types, statistical approaches to different data types, and data visualization.
3 – Development of statistics materials for laboratories and field trips (Fall and Winter terms)
Collaborate in the design of data collection, analysis and reporting components of field trips and labs. The Statistics Instructor will work with the Biology, Earth Science and Psychology subject instructors to
· Develop the statistical component for 3 Biology field trips in fall term (design data sheets, compile student-collected data). Duties will include participation in 2 to 4 of the field trips.
· Develop the statistical component for 3 laboratories activities (One each for Biology, Earth Science, Psychology) in winter term (design data sheets, compile student-collected data)
4 – Collaborative teaching and assessment (Fall and Winter term): Engage with instructors of the other subjects and work collaboratively to deliver the statistics component as part of an integrated whole.
· Attend weekly meetings with other Integrated Science faculty.
· Provide year end feedback on the statistics curriculum of SCIE 1506 by April 30, 2023.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position

A graduate degree completed or in progress in Statistics, Mathematics, or a related discipline. Experience teaching university-level courses in statistics. Experience teaching R at an introductory level. Experience applying statistics to data in other disciplines is desired. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated potential for teaching excellence in Introductory Statistics. The successful candidate will be expected to uphold values of equity, diversity, and inclusion within DISP.

The responsibilities of the successful applicant will include all lecture and guest speaker preparation, additional meetings with student teams outside of class time, and providing feedback to weekly presentations. Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

The part-time academic will be responsible for the continued development and teaching of the Writing in Science component of the Dalhousie Integrated Science Program (DISP) (see https://www.dal.ca/faculty/science/integrated-science-program.html), in collaboration with other DISP faculty. The position is valued at the equivalent of 2.5 CUPE PTA units over the fall and winter.

Responsibilities are as follows:

1 – Developing Writing in Science teaching materials for SCIE 1506 (Fall term) and SCIE 1507 (Winter term)
·  Develop instructions and supporting resources and rubrics for a new field trip report on coastal dunes. Align writing assignment instructions with field procedures established by DISP Faculty.
·  Develop Brightspace quizzes to assess student comprehension of an assigned scientific article.
·  Develop teaching resources for Fall and Winter writing in science workshops. Example topics include: Asking questions, anatomy of a scientific paper, citing the literature, paraphrasing and economy of expression.
 
2 – Instruction of Writing in Science content in SCIE 1506 (Fall term): 
·  Teach scientific writing to first year science students by preparing and delivering tutorials and exercises on the parts of a scientific paper and on the term writing assignments (~12 tutorials, Wednesdays 1630-1730) and by assisting teaching a field trip on coastal dunes (Sept 23) which is the basis for written assignments.
·  Consult with Dalhousie Libraries, DISP Faculty and guest workshop hosts to determine content and logistics for workshops of Types of Scientific Articles, Mapping (GIS), and Infographics. Attend and assist teaching these workshops (~5 workshops Tuesdays 835-955 or Friday 1435-1735)
·  Mark and provide extensive and timely written feedback on individual sections of the coastal dune field trip report: intro + methods, results + discussion, full report (for 25-30 students).
·  Hire and oversee field report marking completed by two TAs (marking report sections and field reports for 25 students each)
·  Meet with students to discuss writing during weekly office hours (1-2 hours per week) and by email.
·  Fulfill administrative duties associated with the Writing in Science component (e.g., update rubrics, upload learning resources to Brightspace, upload grades)
3 – Instruction of Writing in Science content in SCIE 1507 (Winter term)
Students in Integrated Science complete research projects in Dalhousie and affiliated host labs in the winter term, and complete writing assignments related to their research projects (research proposal, annotated bibliography, topic sentence outline and first and final research paper drafts). In April students present their projects in a conference-style event.
The Writing in Science Instructor will:
·  Update and teach tutorials and workshops on writing assignments (~8 at 1 hour each, Thursdays 1030-1130)
·  Provide extensive and timely written feedback to 30-40 students on the following: topic sentence outline, first draft research paper, final research paper. Consider input from host labs when providing written feedback to students
·  Meet with research supervisors as needed for clarification on research topics
·   Meet with students to discuss writing during weekly office hours (1-2 hours per week) and by email.
·  Coordinate marking with two teaching assistants who will each mark for 20 students
·  Fulfill administrative duties associated with the writing in science component (e.g., update rubrics, upload learning resources to Brightspace, upload grades)
·  Assist with research proposal and presentation marking
SCIE 1506 and 1507:
·  Attend weekly meetings with other Integrated Science faculty (fall and winter)
·  Support integrated aspects of DISP by invigilating, marking, and Brightspace work
·  Provide year end feedback on and suggestions for the writing in science curriculum by April 30th
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Preference will be given to applicants with a background/degree(s) in life sciences and a working knowledge of core concepts in physical sciences. Graduate research experience in life sciences. Strong interest in teaching writing and critical thinking, outstanding writing skills, and experience preparing scientific manuscripts. Demonstrated potential for teaching excellence and previous experience reviewing scientific writing or teaching writing to undergraduates is an asset. The successful candidate will be expected to uphold values of equity, diversity, and inclusion within DISP.

The University of King’s College’s History of Science and Technology Program invites applications for a part-time instructor who would be responsible for teaching the following course:

HSTC 2410   Imagining Artificial Intelligence and Robotics 
Though the term ‘artificial intelligence’ was first coined in 1956, human beings have dreamt of creating intelligent machines for centuries. In this course, we will uncover the rich history of both artificial intelligence and robotics. We will begin with the automata of ancient Greece and work our way through the Islamic golden age toward the modern era of artificial intelligence research. This historical picture will be complemented by an examination of current advances in AI and robotics in a number of different fields, including mathematical proof, policing, high-frequency trading, art, agriculture, law, and advertising. Along the way, we will also pay close attention to the philosophical, social, and ethical implications posed by these technological developments and their applications to nearly every aspect of modern life.

The class will be offered on-line as an Asynchronous Session summer term (June 3 – August 27, 2021).

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting online classes and discussions, evaluating assignments, attending staff meetings, and holding online office hours.  If eligible, the candidate may be required to supervise a teaching assistant.  This position reports to the Director of the Program.
