Academic Calendar Description: This course will explore how we come to know and relate with our local ecosystems, including urban, and the meaning of cultural landscapes. How do they become imbued with values and narratives of the people living within them? This exploration will include concepts of conservation and the role of cultural narratives among different cultures, and its’ potential impact on the stewardship of traditional landscapes. Students will be introduced to innovative applied research methods of sensory ethnography, personal and group reflective practices, ethno-autobiography, as well as Indigenous methodologies. We will look at the role of expressive arts such as story and poetry, performance arts, music, and film and other visual representation as a means to create cross-cultural, community-based research.
Qualifications: Applicants must posses at least an MA degree in Anthropology or related discipline with specialized knowledge of the subject matter of the course. Centered in the Minas Basin, the course provides a backdrop for investigating archaeological components of palaeolandscapes above and below modern sea levels. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Anthropology, Sociology, or
related discipline, or be near completion. Candidates must have a
demonstrated commitment to, and successful experience with, teaching at
the university level relevant to course content. The Sociology and
Anthropology program emphasizes the development of critical social
research skills and preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate
a commitment to and successful experience with research-focused pedagogy.
