Position Title Part-Time Academic (THEA 2822.03: Dance & Movement 2b) – Winter 2026

Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

This Part-Time Academic will be fully responsible for the teaching and grading of THEA 2822.03: Dance and Movement 2b, from January 1 to April 30, 2026 (Winter Term). This course is a requirement for students enrolled in the Honors BA in Theatre (Acting Program) and is a practical, physical, studio exploration into movement and dance techniques. Emphasis is on time, space, energy, correct body alignment and safe practices, with attention to the development of personal expression through the mediums of movement and dance, as well as on the development of practical skills in preparation for a career in the professional theatre.

The instructor is required to provide a Method of Assessment in consultation with full-time Acting Program faculty. As well, the instructor is required to prepare and grade all assignments, and to calculate final marks in time for student interviews that take place at the end of each term. Final marks must then be submitted online. This position works in collaboration with full-time Acting Program faculty and reports to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree is preferred, but a candidate with a consdierable experience, skills and knowledge, will be considered. In addition, the following qualifications are required for this position:
    1. substantial experience and specialization in a form of movement considered valuable for actors (especially movement for the stage);
    2. ability to instruct students with diverse dance-training backgrounds, new movers, and broad levels of musicality, dexterity, and coordination;
    3. teaching experience at the post-secondary level;
    4. evidence of strong teaching effectiveness.

 

Ability to deliver a variety of dance and movement disciplines (creative movement/ballet/jazz/historical dance/gesture work/text & movement etc.) will be considered an asset.

This course is a practical exploration into the dance techniques, incorporating the use of space, rhythm, and correct body alignment, as well as flexibility and strength. Emphasis is on the development of personal expression through the medium of dance. Students are expected to develop an awareness of dance terminology and an appreciation of movement as a practice. The instructor will be expected to teach students with recent technical dance training e.g. jazz/ballet/modern contemporary, beyond a beginner level (4-6 years). This course will build skills toward the elementary level course. The instructor is required to provide a Method of Assessment.     1. Develop 12 weeks of course content related to scenic design for live performance to be delivered in person through lectures, readings, discussions, presentations, and other assessments.
    2. Build the online course space in Brightspace.
    3. Grade assessments (student presentations, design assignments, essays/written work, participation/ discussions) and provide timely feedback to students.

 

The instructor will work closely with faculty and teaching staff in the Stage Design and Technical Theatre program to coordinate curriculum requirements. The instructor is required to provide a Method of Assessment. This position reports to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
The successful applicant should have an MA or MFA in Scenic Design or a related discipline. Candidates with a BA or BFA in or a related discipline and substantial professional experience in the relevant discipline will be considered. The successful candidate should be proficient in 3D scale model construction and hand and digital drafting practices. Experience with VectorWorks is considered an asset. Experience with scenic painting, props design, and design for film and television is an asset, as is familiarity with costume design. Previous experience teaching at a university, with documented evidence of teaching ability, is also an asset. Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

This Part-Time Academic will take responsibility for the teaching and grading of THEA 1451.03 Introduction to Costume Studies from September 1 to December 31, 2025 (Fall Term).

Duties will include lecture preparations and technical demonstrations, course materials and assignments, and the evaluation of students’ work. The successful candidate will work in consultation and coordination with the full-time faculty and supervise the work of one teaching assistant. This position reports to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

MA or MFA in Theatre, Costume Studies, or related discipline. Candidates with a BA or BFA in Theatre, Costume Studies or related discipline and substantial professional experience in clothing construction techniques, in general, will be considered. Experience in teaching at the university level, with documented evidence of teaching ability, is an asset.

Position Title Part-Time Academic: THEA/PERF 2024.03 Elementary Dance Skills & Techniques – Summer 2025

Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

This Part-Time Academic will be fully responsible for the teaching and grading of one section of THEA/PERF2024.03 Elementary Dance Skills & Techniques. This class is taught in person, every morning Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu from 8:35 -11:25 AM (Studley Campus – Dal Arts Centre RM#327), from June 2 – 23, 2025.

This course is a practical exploration into the dance techniques, incorporating the use of space, rhythm, and correct body alignment, as well as flexibility and strength. Emphasis is on the development of personal expression through the medium of dance. Students are expected to develop an awareness of dance terminology and an appreciation of movement as a practice.

The instructor is required to provide a Method of Assessment. This position reports to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree, including the following qualifications, are required for this position:
  • specialization in jazz and contemporary dance techniques and stage dance movement, covering technical basics from such techniques such as Mattox/Simonsen (jazz), Graham/Limon (contemporary) and musical theatre styles.
  • ability to instruct students with diverse dance-training backgrounds, and broad levels of musicality, dexterity, and coordination.
  • teaching experience at the post-secondary level;
  • evidence of strong teaching effectiveness.

This portion is worth one half (1/2) of the full credit course (equivalent to three credit hours) taking place in Český Krumlov, Czech Republic, from May 30 to June 30, 2025.
Travel expenses will be reimbursed and accommodation will be provided.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position
