Course: PHIL 1306 Reality, Thinking, and the Self

Department: Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, Saint Mary’s University

Semester: Winter 2024 (Jan. 8, 2024 – April 22, 2024)

Schedule: Seminars/lectures MW 2:30-3:45

Course description: 

Does God exist? Do souls exist? What is the self? Could a Computer ever think? What can we know about reality? Students explore these questions and others through a discussion of classical and contemporary philosophical readings.

Qualifications:

The preferred applicant will have PhD-level research experience. Applicants must be at least ABDs in philosophy or a related field and should have experience teaching at the university level. Experience with remote /online delivery is an asset.

Duties:

This course is scheduled to be delivered on campus for the academic year 2023-2024. However, it is possible that the course will be moved to on-line/remote delivery, in the event that the University is required to close for covid-related reasons. Duties and responsibilities include course/lecture preparation and delivery (either on campus or remote); preparation and evaluation of all student assessments. The course is capped at 50 students.

Remuneration:

Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement between Saint Mary’s University and CUPE 3912.

This course is an introduction to essential principles of reasoning and critical thinking. It is designed to develop students’ abilities to evaluate various forms of reasoning, to examine critically beliefs, conventions, and theories, and to develop sound arguments. Emphasis will be given to decision-making and arguments in ordinary language, particularly those addressed to issues of public concern and moral debate.

Course: PHIL 1248 Killing and Letting Die

Department: Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, Saint Mary’s University

Semester: Spring term (May 9, 2022 – June 25, 2025)

Schedule: Seminars/lectures MW 9:30-12:30

Course description: 

When, if ever, is it morally permissible to kill another human being, or yourself? What is morally problematic about killing? Is killing morally worse than letting die? Are we morally obligated to prevent as many deaths as we can? This course explores these questions and others through a discussion of classical and contemporary philosophical readings.

Qualifications:

The preferred applicant will have PhD-level research experience. Applicants must be at least ABDs in philosophy or a related field and should have experience teaching at the university level. Experience with remote /online delivery is an asset. As University courses for the winter semester may be offered online, both synchronous and asynchronous teaching are possible.

Duties:

Duties and responsibilities include course and lecture preparation; preparation and evaluation of all student assessments.

Remuneration:

Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement between Saint Mary’s University and CUPE 3912.

A part-time academic is required to teach PHIL 2480 (Environmental Ethics) in the winter term (January – April 2022). The class is scheduled for in-person instruction on Tues.&Thurs  from 11:30am-1:00pm The Part-Time Academic’s duties involve full responsibility for the class including but not limited to: class lectures, office hours, development of course outlines, preparation and grading of assignments, tests and exams. The position reports to the Chair of the Department.

Duties:

This course is scheduled to be delivered on-line/remotely for the duration of the academic year 2021-2022. Duties and responsibilities include course/lecture preparation and online/remote delivery; preparation and evaluation of all student assessments. The course is capped at 60 students.

Remuneration:

Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement between Saint Mary’s University and CUPE 3912.

Course description:

Are such values such as good and bad, or beautiful and ugly, a part of the nature of the world or do they exist only in our minds? What is the role of pleasure and virtue, or knowledge and beauty in a life well lived? Students consider the work of moral philosophers and philosophers of art who try to identify the concepts and principles that help us to answer these questions.

Qualifications:

Job Summary & Key Responsibilities JOB SUMMARY: A part-time academic is required to teach PHIL 2120.03, Philosophical Topics in Theory and Popular Culture in summer term A (May 10-June 28, 2021), Monday-Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. (time can be amended). The part-time academic’s duties involve full responsibility for the class including but not limited to: class lectures, office hours, development of course outlines, preparation and grading of assignments, tests and exams. Due to the current Covid-19 outbreak and ongoing social distance protocols, Dalhousie may be moving this class to an online teaching format. Experience with teaching in an online environment is preferred, and candidates must be willing to teach online.
