Position Title Part-Time Academic (SPAN 3408)

Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
SPAN 3408: The Cuban Development Model
A part-time instructor is needed to teach SPAN 3408.03 for the Winter term of the 2021-22 academic year. This course is taught in English.
This course examines the evolution of the Cuban development model, from the Conquest and colonization by the Spanish to the reforms of the early 21st Century. The objective is to develop an understanding of the various development strategies employed by Cuba, particularly since the revolution of 1959. When asked about the Cuban development model, most people nowadays would say “tourism”. Thirty years ago it was sugar—as it had been from the beginning if the 16th Century. In fact Cuba obtains most of its hard currency from medical-related services—mainly from the exportation of medical services, but also from the sale of sophisticated biotechnological products. Cuba’s approach has evolved dramatically in the last two decades, and particular attention will be paid to this period.
The instructor of this course will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures, test preparation, evaluation and electronic submission of grades. Instructors are expected to maintain reliable and constant communication with the administration of the Department, to be available for two hours per week for consultation with students, and to have students fill out the evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course.  Instructors report to the Chairperson of the Spanish and Latin American Studies Department.
This course is held online – Asynchronously
